LINGLE – The Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers battled back from a first-quarter deficit against cross-border rival Morrill to rout the Lady Lions by a 21-point margin, 58-37, when the final buzzer sounded at home on Tuesday, January 28.
LFL’s victory against Morrill improved the Lady Doggers’ season record to 12-2. LFL remains undefeated in the conference at 6-0.
On Tuesday, LFL lay the foundation for its comeback with an 18-10 second quarter performance to pull up by one possession, 27-25, at halftime. The Lady Doggers clinched their win in a gritty third quarter that saw LFL net 16 points while holding Morrill to three.
“The girls started out behind against Morrill as they hit some quick shots,” coach Susan Bartel said. “We made some adjustments and the team dug in and fought back and by half we were up by two. After half we came out strong and were able to secure a hard fought win.”
The Lady Doggers hosted Southeast for the second cross-county rivalry game on Thursday. Results were not available at press time.
Turning the tables
Morrill established an early lead to pull ahead, 15-9, at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Lions quickly lost the initiative in the second quarter. Junior Skyla Wunder swept in to grab a steal on Morrill’s first possession and scored on a fastbreak.
Sophomore Charlotte Speckner followed up a close-range shot and two free throws to tie the game, 15-15.
Wunder snatched another steal and went on to drain a deep 3-pointer to place the Lady Doggers ahead, 18-17.
Freshman Madison Bugher picked up a steal, setting Wunder up to swish another trey.
Sophomore Afton Schilreff entered the fray and scored from inside the perimeter and tossed in a free throw.
Charlotte Speckner rustled a steal and broke through Morrill’s perimeter to score.
By halftime, LFL found itself in control of the scoreboard, 27-25.
LFL’s second-quarter momentum carried over into the second half with a coordinated Lady Dogger offense tossing in 16 points in the third quarter while a solid LFL defense held the Lady Lions to three.
Wunder paced the Lady Dogger offense in the third, tallying nine points, including an outside shot, two free throws and a pair of jumpers.
Junior Jordynn Speckner widened LFL’s lead to 10 points, 38-28, midway through the third quarter with a close-range shot.
Jordynn Speckner topped off the quarter by scoring on a fastbreak and the Lady Doggers entered the final eight minutes of regulation ahead, 43-28.
LFL sealed its win in the fourth quarter that saw the Lady Doggers top Morrill in scoring, 15-9. Charlotte Speckner paved the way with eight points, while Schilreff collected four and junior Avary Rising found an opening in the perimeter to score after scooping up a steal.
Wunder led the Lady Dogger offense against Morrill with 25 points. Charlotte Speckner also tallied double-digit scoring with 17 points. Schilreff contributed seven points, Jordynn Speckner six and Rising three.
Charlotte Speckner posted another double-double against Morrill with 13 rebounds. Jordynn Speckner and senior Brenly Shipp both pulled down five rebounds.
Wunder filled out the stat sheet with three assists and 10 steals.
