Lady Doggers go undefeated

YODER – The Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers basketball team picked up their ninth and 10th season victories with back-to-back conference wins against Southeast and Niobrara County High School over the weekend.

The Lady Doggers opened with a point-for-point battle against the Southeast Lady Cyclones in the first cross-county rivalry game on Thursday, January 16. The game deadlocked in the third quarter before a six-point run by the Lady Doggers swung the scoreboard in LFL’s favor, 34-27, at the final buzzer.

On Friday, the Lady Doggers traveled to Lusk to defeat Niobrara County by 16 points, 53-37.

“I was very happy with the outcome of our conference games this weekend against two tough teams,” coach Susan Bartel said. “The girls are getting into their groove and working well together.”

Cross-county game

The Lady Doggers won the first quarter against Southeast, 11-4. Junior Jordynn Speckner set the pace for the LFL offense in the first eight minutes with a layup and scored on a fastbreak. 

Southeast turned the tables in the second quarter to outscore LFL, 9-5, although the Lady Doggers remained ahead by one possession, 16-13, at halftime.

Southeast pulled up, 18-16, in the first minute of the third quarter. Free throws for LFL by junior Skyla Wunder and sophomore Afton Schilreff tied the game, 18-18.

Southeast regained the lead by two points, 20-18. Wunder swept in for a steal and scored on a fastbreak and the game reached a 20-20 stalemate at the end of the third.

The back-and-forth continued into the fourth quarter. A pair of close-range shots by senior Brenly Shipp returned the advantage to LFL, 24-22.

The Lady Cyclones matched LFL in scoring at 24. A free throw apiece by Jordynn Speckner and sophomore Charlotte Speckner swung the scoreboard in the Lady Doggers’ favor, 26-24.

LFL widened its lead to four points, 28-24, when Wunder scored on a fastbreak. The Lady Doggers maintained the defensive pressure with steals by Charlotte Speckner and Schilreff.

With 55 seconds remaining on the clock, Wunder tossed in a layup to place LFL up, 30-27.

Charlotte Speckner stepped up in the final seconds of the game to go 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and seal the win for the Lady Doggers.

Wunder led LFL in scoring against Southeast with 12 points. Jordynn Speckner contributed eight points, Charlotte Speckner seven, Shipp six and Schilreff one.

Wunder led on the boards with five rebounds. 

A strong LFL defense proved crucial to the win, with the Lady Doggers totaling 20 steals – led by Wunder with nine. Jordynn Speckner recorded four steals, Charlotte Speckner three, Schilreff two with one each by senior Addison Scott and junior Avary Rising.

Niobrara County

A dogfight for points in the first half between LFL and the Lady Tigers placed the Lady Doggers ahead, 39-26.

Both teams netted six points in a neck-and-neck third quarter, although Niobrara County’s effort to close the gap came up short and LFL remained up, 45-32, as the final quarter commenced.

The Lady Doggers outscored Niobrara County, 8-5, in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.

Charlotte Speckner posted a double-double against Niobrara County with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Jordynn Speckner tallied 13 points, Shipp eight, Wunder six, Rising and freshman Shaylyn Wunder three apiece with two each by Scott and Schilreff.

LFL excelled again on defense against Niobrara County, with 27 total steals – led by Wunder with nine and five by Charlotte Speckner.
