GILLETTE – The Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers rounded out 2024 on a high note, going undefeated at the Goshen County Basketball Classic it co-hosted with Southeast from December 20-21.
Kicking the tournament off against Hanna-Elk Mountain (HEM), the Lady Doggers won by a commanding 53-27 margin on Friday afternoon.
Friday evening’s matchup pitted the Lady Doggers against Kaycee with LFL winning, 49-26.
On Saturday morning, LFL fought off an attempt by Encampment to turn the tables, defeating the Lady Tigers, 52-40.
In the final game, the Lady Doggers nearly shut out Rock River, beating the Lady Longhorns, 37-2.
“The LFL girls had a great weekend, sweeping their competition at the GoCo Classic,” coach Susan Bartel said. “The girls played well together and I’m proud of their results. We worked on quite a few things and mixed up the lineups to get everyone familiar with playing with each other. We were able to keep the turnovers to a minimum and we able to out-rebound the competition – a recipe for success.”
HEM
The Lady Doggers dominated the first quarter against HEM, outscoring the Lady Minters, 15-5.
LFL won the second quarter by one point, 11-10, to establish a 25-16 lead at halftime.
In a physical third quarter, the Lady Doggers netted 15 points while holding HEM to eight.
The final eight minutes of regulation opened with the Lady Doggers ahead, 40-24. LFL tossed in 13 points in the fourth quarter while preventing HEM from scoring more than three.
Junior Jordynn Speckner led the Lady Doggers in scoring with 16 points. Senior Brenly Shipp tallied 11 points, junior Skyla Wunder nine and sophomore Charlotte Speckner eight. Freshman Madison Bugher and junior Avary Rising each contributed four points with a free throw by sophomore Afton Schilreff.
On the boards, Jordynn Speckner led with seven rebounds. Wunder shared the ball for seven assists. Jordynn Speckner and Wunder both grabbed five steals and Rising posted one block.
Kaycee
The Lady Doggers battled Kaycee to a 32-16 lead at halftime.
LFL maintained the pressure in the third quarter, scoring 12 points while holding Kaycee to four.
The Lady Doggers’ second string controlled the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with five more points.
Jordynn Speckner set the pace for LFL in scoring with 10 points. Wunder and Shipp both tallied nine points, Charlotte Speckner eight, Rising five, Schilreff four with two apiece by senior Addison Scott and sophomore Madison Hatch.
Charlotte Speckner and Rising both pulled down five rebounds.
Scott, Jordynn Speckner, sophomore Sidnie James, Wunder, Hatch and freshman Hayden Willey each delivered one assist. Wunder posted seven steals and senior Alicia McGraw one block.
Encampment
The first quarter between the Lady Doggers and Encampment ended with LFL more than doubling the Lady Tigers in points, 19-9.
The Lady Doggers outpaced Encampment, 14-8, in the second quarter and led, 33-17, at halftime.
LFL’s defense stepped up the intensity in the third quarter, holding Encampment to four points while the Lady Dogger offense netted 12. LFL won the fourth quarter, 19-7.
Wunder and Jordynn Speckner both scored double digits against Encampment at 18 and 14 points, respectively. Schilreff and Rising both contributed four points with two by Scott and Shipp.
Jordynn Speckner and Charlotte Speckner both pulled down seven rebounds. Wunder delivered four assists and snatched nine steals. Jordynn Speckner, Shipp and Rising each had one block.
Rock River
The Lady Doggers shut out Rock River in the first quarter, 12-0. LFL hammered away at Rock River in the second quarter to toss in 10 points while holding the Lady Longhorns to only two.
The halftime score favored LFL, 22-2.
A tenacious Lady Dogger defense prevented Rock River from scoring in the second half while LFL netted 16 points.
Ten Lady Doggers contributed to final points tally against Rock River. Jordynn Speckner netted eight points, Wunder six, Charlotte Speckner five, Shipp four and Shilreff three. Scott, sophomore Jordan Rohrer, Bugher, Rising and Willey each tallied two points with freshman Peyton Lincoln netting a free throw
