GUERNSEY – The Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers volleyball team rallied from a semifinal setback to snag the consolation championship at the 1A East regional tournament in Guernsey from November 1-2.
LFL pulled out all the stops in the opening match at regionals to sweep Midwest on Friday morning.
The Lady Doggers advanced to the semifinals where they squared off against undefeated Upton. LFL battled Upton through five point-for-point sets with Upton ultimately winning, 3-2.
The Lady Doggers left it all on the court in the consolation bracket to defeat Kaycee, 3-0, on Saturday morning.
Progressing to the consolation finals, LFL dispatched Niobrara County in four sets, 3-1, to clinch the No. 3 seed going into the state championships in Casper this weekend.
Coach Emily Cottrell expressed pride in the team’s 3-1 record at regionals.
“We had a plan and we executed it,” Cottrell added. “I appreciate the energy the girls brought to the games – the focus, ability to redirect when things weren’t necessarily going our way to regain ball control. We played really good volleyball this weekend and I am so proud of the girls for their hard work and commitment to each other and their end of season goals. This group of young ladies is phenomenal on and off the court.”
The Lady Doggers open the state tournament with a match against the No. 2 seed from the west, Little Snake River, on Thursday in Casper’s Ford Wyoming Center at 4:30 p.m.
Midwest
The Lady Doggers set the momentum in the opening game against Midwest with a clean sweep, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-10.
Junior Skyla Wunder and sophomore Charlotte Speckner both led the LFL offense with nine kills. Juniors Jordynn Speckner and Hallie Fuller each tallied eight kills with senior Brenly Shipp contributing six and senior Grace Gibson one.
On the service line, Shipp totaled six aces, senior Kenzi Wilkins four, Jordynn Speckner and Wunder two apiece and Charlotte Speckner one.
Shipp delivered 21 assists and Wunder 15.
Defensively, Jordynn Speckner collected 21 digs with Wilkings posting 16.
Wunder and Gibson both totaled three blocks with two apiece by Jordynn Speckner and Charlotte Speckner.
Semifinals – Upton
The Lady Doggers hit the ground running in the first set against the Lady Bobcats, winning by a 25-16 margin.
Upton fired back to defeat LFL in the second set, 25-19.
The Lady Doggers battled Upton beyond 25 in the third set to triumph, 27-25. Upton went on to win the fourth set, 25-21, followed by a 15-6 victory in the tiebreaker fifth set.
Wunder set the pace for the Lady Doggers offense with 12 kills. Charlotte Speckner contributed nine kills, Jordynn Speckner eight, Shipp seven, Fuller six and Gibson two.
Shipp aced four serves while Charlotte Speckner served up three aces. Wilkins, Wunder and Fuller each posted one ace.
Shipp passed the ball for 23 assists.
On defense, Shipp totaled six blocks, Jordynn Speckner and Wunder four each with two apiece by Charlotte Speckner and Gibson.
Wilkins collected 21 digs.
Kaycee
The Lady Doggers quickly recovered from the Upton game to defeat Kaycee in three sets, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-10.
Four Lady Doggers tallied seven kills against Kaycee – Jordynn Speckner, Wunder, Shipp and Fuller. Charlotte Speckner and Gibson both contributed five kills.
Aces included three by both Wunder and Fuller with one apiece from Jordynn Speckner and Charlotte Speckner.
Shipp delivered 18 assists and Wunder 17.
Fuller led the Lady Doggers in digs with 19. Jordynn Speckner totaled 15 digs, Wunder 12 and Wilkins 10.
Shipp defended the net for eight blocks. Charlotte Speckner collected six blocks, Wunder two and Jordynn Speckner one.
Consolation title game
LFL advanced to the consolation championship game against Niobrara County on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Doggers won the first set by three, 25-22.
Niobrara County responded to prevail in the second set, 25-19.
Leaving it all on the court in the third set, the Lady Doggers trounced Niobrara County by a 25-9 margin. The Lady Doggers maintained the momentum into the fourth set to win, 25-19.
Two Lady Doggers posted double-digit kills against Niobrara County with Charlotte Speckner at 13 and Jordynn Speckner 11. Wunder contributed nine kills, Shipp six, Gibson five, Fuller three and sophomore Kynzi Thomas one.
On the service line, Shipp aced five points with one ace by Wunder, Fuller and Charlotte Speckner.
Shipp tallied 21 assists with Wunder passing the ball for 17.
Fuller posted 19 digs with Thomas adding 18, Wunder 15, Wilkins and Shipp 14 apiece and Jordynn Speckner 12.
Charlotte Speckner led defensively with six blocks. Shipp totaled four blocks with two each by Jordynn Speckner, Wunder and Fuller.
