BURNS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) Lady Doggers basketball team began the winter season with two wins at the Burns Winter Classic from December 12-14.
LFL cruised past Mitchell, Nebraska, by a 51-33 margin in the opening game on Thursday. On Friday, the Lady Doggers came up short against 3A Wheatland, 62-29.
Digging deep, LFL returned to the court for a physical, point-for-point battle against Big Horn on Friday evening. The Lady Doggers outscored Wheatland by one crucial point in overtime to snag the victory, 39-38.
The final game pitted the Lady Doggers against Tongue River with LFL falling, 58-30.
“The LFL girls started out the season playing in the Burns tourney against some challenging teams,” coach Susan Bartel said. “We are utilizing three new starters and are a young team. I was proud of how they pulled out the overtime win against Big Horn, but we have some additional work to do to prepare for conference play.”
Mitchell
The Lady Doggers hit the ground running in the first quarter against Mitchell, netting 20 points while a tenacious LFL defense held Mitchell to nine.
The second quarter was closer, but the Lady Doggers continued to outscore Mitchell, 10-8, to establish a 28-19 lead at halftime.
An explosive third quarter saw the Lady Doggers top Mitchell in scoring, 23-13, placing LFL ahead by nearly 20 points, 51-32, at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
LFL’s second string entered the fray in the fourth quarter to round out the game.
Junior Skyla Wunder led LFL in scoring against Mitchell with 14 points. Sophomore Charlotte Speckner tallied 12 points, junior Jordynn Speckner eight, junior Avary Rising six and senior Brenly Shipp five. Sophomore Madison Hatch, freshman Shaylyn Wunder and senior Alicia McGraw each rounded scoring out with two points.
On the boards, Jordynn Speckner and Charlotte Speckner both pulled down six rebounds with Shipp posting five.
Jordynn Speckner and Skyla Wunder each shared the ball for four assists.
Defensively, Jordynn Speckner picked up eight steals while Skyla Wunder posted seven. Jordynn Speckner and senior Addison Scott each totaled one block.
Big Horn
The first half between LFL and Big Horn characterized the game with the lead changing hands several times. Big Horn won the opening quarter by a single point, 6-5. The Lady Doggers responded in the second quarter to outscore Big Horn by one point, 9-8.
The game reached a 19-19 deadlock at halftime.
LFL pulled ahead in the third quarter, netting 13 points while holding Big Horn to eight.
The Lady Doggers entered the fourth quarter ahead by several possessions, 27-22.
Big Horn managed to close the gap in the final eight minutes of regulation to tie the game, 33-33, at the final buzzer.
The game went into overtime and Big Horn scored a free throw to briefly take the lead, 34-33. The Lady Doggers responded with a close-range shot and layup by Charlotte Speckner to move ahead, 37-34.
Big Horn converted an and-1 and netted a free throw to pull up, 38-37.
With five seconds remaining on the clock, Jordynn Speckner took a pass from Charlotte Speckner, raced down the court, found an opening inside the perimeter and drained a shot for the win.
Charlotte Speckner posted her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Shipp netted nine points, Skyla Wunder seven, Jordynn Speckner six, Scott and Shaylyn Wunder two each with a free throw by Schilreff.
Jordynn Speckner also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Skyla Wunder passed the ball for four assists, snatched seven steals and collected two blocks.
