GOSHEN COUNTY – Both Southeast High School basketball teams begin their respective seasons ranked in the preseason WyoPreps.com Coaches and Media poll which was released last Friday.
The Lady Cyclones, the defending Class 1A state champions, begin the season right where they left off last March – on top of Class 1A.
They earned all 13 first-place votes as the team returns four of the five starters from a year ago.
Cokeville is No. 2, while Burlington is No. 3. Upton and Riverside round out the top five.
In the 1A boys’ division, Southeast heads into the season at No. 5. The Cyclones earned one first-place vote after falling in the consolation championship game a year ago.
Defending state champion, the Upton Bobcats, are the favorite to run it back this season, while Saratoga is No. 2. Burlington and Dubois are third and fourth, respectively.
Both Southeast teams compete this weekend in the annual Burns Winter Classic. They open play at home on Thursday against Guernsey-Sunrise at 5:30 and 7 p.m. Before playing Class 3A Moorcroft at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Friday at the old Burns High School gym on Friday. Southeast also faces Douglas on Friday evening and Newcastle and Burns on Saturday.
In Class 2A, the Lingle-Fort Laramie teams are receiving votes. Both the Dogger boys and Dogger girls earned one fifth-place vote.
In the girls’ division, Rocky Mountain is the favorite, while Wyoming Indian is No. 2. Tongue River is No. 3, while Burns is No. 4. Sundance rounds out the top five.
In the boys’ division, defending state champion Pine Bluffs is again the favorite, while Big Horn is No. 2. Tongue River is No. 3, and Wind River is No. 4. Rocky Mountain rounds out the top five.
Lingle heads to the Burns Winter Classic and will face Big Horn at 10 a.m. on Friday and Moorcroft at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Lingle wraps up play against Newcastle at noon on Saturday.
