Lady Cyclones take down Guernsey

Posted

YODER – An explosive 14-2 first quarter by the Southeast High School Lady Cyclones against the Guernsey Lady Vikings at home on Tuesday, February 18, lay the groundwork for Southeast to score a decisive 47-20 conference victory.

A scrappy Southeast defense held Guernsey to only three points in the first half while the Lady Cyclones offense netted 20 points. The coaching staff put in alternate lineups in the third and fourth quarters with Southeast continuing to top Guernsey in scoring, 27-17, in the second half.

Southeast’s win improved the Lady Cyclones overall record to 13-9 and the team remains the No. 3 seed in the 1A Southeast.

“Thought we started out all right against Guernsey,” coach Jennifer Scheer said. “The first half was a little better than second when we kind of got lackadaisical on defense and Guernsey capitalized and hit some shots. It was a nice game where everyone got to play meaningful minutes with different combinations of kids in different positions. That will help as we gear up for the postseason.”

Southeast also recognized the contributions of its three seniors to the program over the course of four years, honoring Anna Hartman, Brooklyn Leithead and Emilee Moats on Tuesday.

“I’m very lucky to have three senior girls this year, two of which have been with me for four years and been a large part of our success,” Scheer added. “We gained Emilee Moats this year and she brought a great attitude and made big contributions. Both Brooklyn Leithead and Anna Hartman have great work ethics and all three seniors are going to be missed.”

The Lady Cyclones pulled out all the stops in the first quarter, collecting 14 points while holding Guernsey to two.

Sophomore Brylie Booth commenced scoring with a close-range shot and a three-point play. Booth grabbed a steal on Guernsey’s subsequent possession, setting up junior Keana Llewellyn to toss in a jumper.

Defensive pressure by Hartman and Moats forced a turnover and Hartman collected a jumper.

Leithead picked up a steal and scored a free throw. Junior Taylor Tregemba nailed a close-range shot and scooped up a steal, placing Southeast up, 12-0.

Sophomore Haylee Ekwall rounded out scoring in the first quarter with a jumper.

Coverage by junior Kaycee Kosmicki resulted in a turnover before junior Brea Mills snatched a steal.

Southeast netted six points in the second quarter to one by Guernsey. Hartman, sophomore Lyla Wernsman and freshman Briley Leithead each contributed buckets.

Defensively, Tregemba, sophomore Macy Tremain and sophomore Liz Boche each forced turnovers with steals in the second.

Southeast led at halftime, 20-3.

The Lady Cyclones doubled Guernsey in scoring, 10-5, in the third quarter. Brooklyn Leithead opened with a four-point run.

Kosmicki and Booth each drained close-range shots while Kosmicki and Llewellyn each snapped up steals.

A buzzer-beating jumper by Mills placed the Lady Cyclones ahead, 30-8, as the final quarter began.

Nine Lady Cyclones contributed to Southeast’s 17-point spread in the final eight minutes of regulation. Ekwall tossed in a pair of close-range shots while Boche, Briley Leithead, Tregemba, Llewellyn and Mills each collected a bucket. Brooklyn Leithead, Moats and freshman Avery Tighe all scored a free throw.

Booth led the Lady Cyclones in scoring against Guernsey with seven points. Brooklyn Leithead and Ekwall contributed six points apiece while Llewellyn, Hartman, Tregemba, Briley Leithead and Mills each tallied four.

Booth led on the boards with six rebounds while Brooklyn Leithead pulled down five and Tighe four.
