YODER – The Southeast High School Lady Cyclones basketball team notched four more victories at the Goshen County Basketball Classic Tournament it co-hosted with Lingle-Fort Laramie on Friday and Saturday, December 20-21.
The opening game between Southeast and Encampment on Friday came down to the wire with a buzzer beater by senior Brooklyn Leithead clinching a 31-30 victory for the Lady Cyclones.
Southeast never looked back and went on to win the next three games by considerable margins.
The Lady Cyclones defeated Rock River, 38-11, on Friday, before going on to trounce Hanna-Elk Mountain (HEM) on Saturday morning.
The tournament culminated with a resounding 45-18 victory by Southeast against Kaycee on Saturday.
Encampment
The Lady Cyclones netted nine points in the first quarter while a scrappy Southeast defense held the Encampment Lady Tigers to a single point.
Encampment replied in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Cyclones, 10-4, although the Lady Cyclones remained ahead, 13-11, at halftime.
Southeast continued to lead early in the third quarter. A 3-pointer by junior Kaycee Kosmicki placed the Lady Cyclones up by two possessions, 16-11.
Encampment pulled up and tied the game, 20-20. A free throw by Kosmocki returned the advantage to Southeast, 21-20.
Leithead found an opening to score inside the perimeter, maintaining Southeast’s lead, 23-22, as the fourth quarter began.
Both teams scored eight points in a neck-and-neck fourth quarter.
A four-point run by Encampment returned the initiative to the Lady Tigers, 26-23.
Encampment remained ahead, but Southeast kept it a one-possession game with buckets by juniors Keana Llewellyn and Taylor Tregemba.
An inside shot by Booth narrowed Encampment’s lead to one point, 30-29, with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
Encampment drew a foul but missed both attempts to score. Taking possession, Llewellyn passed the ball to Leithead. Leithead drained a close-range shot as the clock reached seven seconds.
Defensive pressure by sophomore Brylie Booth resulted in a turnover and Southeast ended the game in possession.
Leithead set the pace for the Lady Cyclones in scoring with 12 points. Kosmicki tallied 10, Booth four, Tregemba three and Llewellyn two.
Rock River
The Lady Cyclones nearly tripled Rock River in scoring during the first half to establish a 14-5 lead at halftime.
Leithead netted six points before halftime with Booth scoring one close-range shot in both the first and second quarters. Sophomore Lyla Wernsman converted an and-1 to beat the buzzer in the first quarter and fellow sophomore Haylee Ekwall tossed in a free throw in the second.
A fast and furious Lady Cyclones’ offense tallied 19 points in the third quarter while an ironclad Southeast defense shut out Rock River. Tregemba tossed in seven points in the third quarter. Leithead and Kosmicki both collected four points with two apiece by Booth and junior Brea Mills.
Steals by Leithead, Kosmicki, Booth, Mills, senior Anna Hartman, sophomore Rein Coulson and sophomore Macy Tremain prevented Rock River from scoring.
Both teams scored six points in the fourth quarter, including free throws by freshmen Briley Leithead and Avery Tighe.
Leithead again set the momentum for Southeast in scoring against Rock River with 10 points. Tregemba tallied seven points, Kosmicki and Mills four each with three by Wernsman and Ekwall.
HEM
The Lady Cyclones won the first quarter against HEM, 13-6. Kosmicki and Wernsman both tallied four points while Llewellyn drained a trey and Leithead scored an inside shot.
Southeast outscored HEM, 12-5, in the second quarter. Llewellyn went on a four-point run while Wernsman, Hartman, Mills and Kosmicki each scored a bucket.
The halftime score favored Southeast, 25-11.
The Lady Cyclones maintained their momentum into the second half, tossing in 15 points while holding HEM to 13.
Llewellyn led Southeast in scoring against HEM with 10 points. Kosmicki and Wernsman both contributed six points. Leithead netted five points, Mills four with two apiece by Hartman and Ekwall.
Kaycee
Southeast dominated the first two quarters against Kaycee to secure a 24-6 halftime lead.
Leithead netted nine points in the first quarter and Hartman opened regulation with a jumper.
Booth set the momentum in the second quarter with eight points. Kosmicki and Coulson both tallied an inside shot and Wernsman tossed in a free throw.
Southeast shifted into high gear in the third quarter to net 17 points while shutting out Kaycee from scoring. Kosmicki tallied 13 points while Leithead and Booth each scored a bucket from inside the perimeter.
Three Lady Cyclones scored double digits against Kaycee, led by Kosmicki with 15 points, Leithead 11 and Booth 10. Coulson tallied four points, Harman and Mills each two and Wernsman one.
