YODER – The September 17 home match between the Southeast High School Lady Cyclones volleyball team and the Cheyenne East Lady Thunderbird junior varsity squad came down to a neck-and-neck fourth set.
Southeast won the first two sets before Cheyenne East rallied to win the third set.
The fourth set turned into a point-for-point battle for control of the court. Cheyenne East tied the set at 22.
The Lady Thunderbirds served the ball. Southeast senior Brooklyn Leithead received the ball with a dig, bumping it to junior Keana Llewellyn. Llewellyn set up the ball for sophomore Brylie Booth to slam over the net, placing Southeast up, 23-22.
Booth fired off a second kill, assisted by Llewellyn. An ace by Llewellyn resulted in game point, 25-22, and a 3-1 victory for the Lady Cyclones over Cheyenne East.
A four-set showdown
The Lady Cyclones controlled the first set from the opening point to game point. Brooklyn Leithead and junior Hadley Leithead each powered a kill over the net. Hadley Leithead and senior Angie Logsdon reached up for a block and fellow senior Anna Hartman aced a serve.
An ace by junior libero Taylor Tregemba put Southeast up, 9-4.
Booth, Brooklyn Leithead and Hartman slammed over a kill apiece. A pair of aces by Hartman widened the Lady Cyclones’ lead, 15-7.
Logsdon aced a serve and both Brooklyn Leithead and Logsdon delivered a kill. Brooklyn Leithead and Hadley Leithead defended the net with a block. Logsdon aced another serve, followed by a kill from both Hadley Leithead and Brooklyn Leithead.
Tregemba scored game point with a dig, 25-11.
Cheyenne East took the lead early in the first set before Brooklyn Leithead tied the set at four with an ace.
The Lady Cyclones pulled ahead, 17-6, with an eight-point run consisting of aces by Llewellyn and kills from Logsdon and Booth.
Booth delivered a kill and aced a serve, pulling Southeast ahead, 19-7. A kill by Hartman expanded the Lady Cyclone’ lead, 20-9.
Southeast scored 24 with a block from Hadley Leithead. Logsdon aced game point, 25-13.
Cheyenne East rallied in the third set and maintained the lead through 19 when Southeast matched the Lady Thunderbirds in scoring. Tregemba aced a serve and the set reached a 23-23 stalemate before Cheyenne East scored two points to win, 25-23.
The lead switched hands several times early in the fourth set. Cheyenne East pulled ahead at six and widened its lead, 14-10.
A kill by Hartman, an ace from Booth and a kill by Logsdon tied the set at 14. The back and forth continued until the Lady Cyclones pulled up, 17-16, following a kill by Brooklyn Leithead.
Southeast regained the lead after a tie at19 with a kill from Hadley Leithead.
Southeast broke another tie at 23 with a kill by Booth. Llewellyn aced game point, 25-22.
