GUERNSEY – The Southeast High School Lady Cyclones volleyball team overwhelmed conference rival, the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings, in three sets at an away match on Tuesday, September 10.
When the dust settled, Southeast defeated Guernsey by a sizable margin in each of the three sets – 25-6, 25-14 and 25-7.
Following a brief back-and-forth early in the first set, Southeast took control of the scoreboard at three with a kill by sophomore Haylee Ekwall.
The Lady Cyclones then went on a 10-point run to establish a 13-3 lead. Sophomore Rein Coulson aced six serves. Junior libero Taylor Tregemba powered over a kill and seniors Brooklyn Leithead and Anna Hartman reached up for a block.
Hartman responded to a point from the Lady Vikings with a kill. Southeast found itself up, 20-6, following a pair of kills by junior Hadley Leithead and a block from Hadley Leithead and sophomore Brylie Booth.
Blocks by Hadley Leithead, Booth and Ekwall widened the Lady Cyclones’ advantage, 24-6.
Hadley Leithead slammed over game point with a kill, assisted by junior Keana Llewellyn.
Southeast controlled the scoreboard throughout the second set. Hadley Leithead commenced scoring for the Lady Cyclones with a pair of kills. Booth and Brooklyn Leithead each followed up with a kill.
Booth and Tregemba both aced a serve and Hartman and Brooklyn Leithead powered over kills to place Southeast up, 10-4.
Guernsey attempted to close the gap midway into the second set but were answered by a pair of kills and two aces from Booth.
A kill apiece by Hadley Leithead and Hartman took Southeast to 20. Brooklyn Leithead scored point 24 with a block and aced game point, 25-14.
Southeast dominated the third set, opening with a nine-point run. Booth, Hadley Leithead and junior Asha Mathias each delivered a kill while Llewellyn aced a pair of serves and Booth reached up for a block.
The Lady Cyclones maintained the lead, 15-2, with a four-point run including a kill by Hadley Leithead and blocks from Mathias and Brooklyn Leithead.
Booth scored a pair of kills and Coulson aced a serve, placing the Lady Cyclones ahead, 20-4. Hartman whipped up a pair of kills. Tregemba aced a serve and Booth scored game point, 25-7, with a kill.
The Lady Cyclones travel to compete at a 1A tournament hosted by Saratoga on Friday and Saturday.
