Lady Cyclones 5-1 at 1A tourney

SARATOGA – The Southeast High School Lady Cyclones notched five wins at the annual 1A Jamboree hosted by Saratoga and Encampment from September 13-14.

The Lady Cyclones proved their mettle at the tournament consisting of 19 1A teams from across the state, defeating Burlington, Upton, Kaycee, Saratoga and Hanna-Elk Mountain. Southeast came up short against Encampment, though each of the two sets came down to only two points.

The Lady Cyclones kicked off the invitational with a 2-0 win against Burlington.

Burlington controlled the scoreboard for most of the first set before Southeast battled back with a pair of aces by junior Taylor Tregemba. Senior Angie Logsdon aced a serve and tied the set at 19. Another ace by Logsdon widened Southeast’s lead, 22-19, before the Lady Cyclones scored game point, 25-22.

Southeast went on to win the second set, 25-16. The set reached a 9-9 stalemate with a block by senior Anna Hartman. A kill by Booth broke the deadlock at 11 and Logsdon slammed over a kill to place Southeast up, 13-12.

Senior Brooklyn Leithead reached up for a block and Southeast extended its lead, 15-12. Junior Hadley Leithead delivered a kill, placing the Lady Cyclones up, 23-16.

The second match on Friday pitted Southeast against Upton in a three-set battle. Southeast won the first set, 25-22.

The Lady Cyclones maintained the lead in the first set by one point, 8-7, with a kill by Hartman. Southeast pulled ahead, 9-7, following a block from Booth. Booth aced a serve and Southeast led, 14-12. A kill by Booth resulted in game point, 25-22.

Upton turned the tables in the second set to win, 25-23. 

The Lady Cyclones answered back in the third set to defeat Upton, 15-8.

In the third match on Friday, Southeast battled Encampment to a 25-25 tie before Encampment scored two points to win, 27-25. The second set also proved close, with Encampment breaking a stalemate at 23 to prevail, 25-23.

The Lady Cyclones returned to the court on Saturday determined to win and Southeast swept Kaycee, 2-0, in the first match that morning.

The Lady Cyclones offense set the momentum in the first set with a 12-point run, including three aces by Brooklyn Leithead. Hartman and Booth also contributed a kill apiece. 

Hadley Leithead scored game point, 25-16, with a kill.

Kaycee found its footing to establish an early lead in the second set. Hartman reached up for a block and Southeast matched Kaycee in scoring, 8-8.

Blocks by both Brooklyn Leithead and Hadley Leithead returned the lead to Southeast, 10-9 and 14-13, respectively.

Logsdon powered over a kill for game point, 25-17.

Southeast trounced Saratoga in the second match on Saturday, 2-0. The Lady Cyclones won the first set, 25-22, before defeating Saratoga in the second set, 25-21.

Southeast squared off against Hanna-Elk Mountain in the final match of the tournament. The first set went beyond 25 points with Hanna-Elk Mountain winning, 26-24.

Battling back in the second set, the Lady Cyclones routed Hanna-Elk Mountain, 25-12, before overwhelming their opponent in the third set, 15-5, to secure a 2-1 victory.
