Lady Blazers trounce Dogies

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers pulled out all the stops in a four-quarter routing of the Newcastle Lady Dogies, 56-14, at the Willi Gym on Saturday, February 15.

An explosive first quarter saw the Lady Blazers net 19 points while a tenacious defense held the Lady Dogies to three lay the foundation for Torrington’s victory.

Torrington completely shut out Newcastle in the second quarter to widen its lead by more than 30 points, 37-3, at halftime. The Lady Blazers set the running clock in motion in the third quarter while Torrington’s reserve players finished the job in the fourth.

“We needed to take care of this game in order to keep our spot as the No. 2 seed in the (3A) East,” coach Chris Strampe said. “The girls put forth an incredible defensive effort. Our players impressed me with their ability to focus and overwhelm a team that had just posted a solid conference win the night before. There were no letdowns and everyone who got in played with poise and effort.”

On Friday, Torrington came up short to No.-1 ranked Douglas, 70-41, at an away game.

“I was pleased with how we battled Douglas on their home court,” Strampe added. “We were able to get some good looks on offense while making them earn every point they got against us. I know that we improved much more than they did from this game. The next time we see them, we will be even better prepared to give them a run.”

Douglas

Douglas topped Torrington in scoring in the first quarter, 18-6.

The second quarter proved closer with the Lady Blazers netting 16 points to 20 by Douglas, the Torrington offense anchored by nine points from junior Kennedy Reinhardt.

The teams headed for the locker rooms with the Lady Bearcats up, 38-22.

A neck-and-neck third quarter saw Douglas outscore Torrington by only a single possession, 15-13. Senior Olive Osmera made a dent in Douglas’ lead with a pair of 3-pointers at the end of the third.

Douglas widened its lead in the final quarter, outmaneuvering Torrington, 17-6.

Reinhardt and junior Natalie Long both paced the Torrington offense against Douglas with nine points apiece. Osmera collected six points while seniors Teryn Stokes and Jaycee Hurley both tallied five. Senior Madix McIntosh tossed in four points while junior Kieana Gunhammer contributed two points and junior Lileana Castro rounded out scoring with a free throw.

Stokes led on the boards with nine rebounds while Osmera pulled down seven and Reinhardt three.

Newcastle

Torrington came out fast and furious in the first quarter against Newcastle and the Lady Blazers topped the Lady Dogies in scoring, 19-3.

Stokes set the momentum for the Torrington offense in the opening eight minutes of regulation with eight points. Long collected four points and Osmera three. McIntosh tossed in a reverse layup and Reinhardt topped off the quarter going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.

On defense, Long, Osmera, Stokes and McIntosh each forced turnovers with steals.

Torrington netted 18 points in the second quarter while a gritty Lady Blazer defense shut out the Lady Dogies. Reinhardt and Stokes each drained six points while Hurley scored four.

Torrington stepped up the defensive intensity in the second with steals by Reinhardt, Long and Stokes.

The Lady Blazers controlled the scoreboard by a 37-3 margin at halftime.

Reinhardt topped off scoring for the Lady Blazers in the third with a deep outside shot, while Long, Reinhardt, Osmera and McIntosh each kept the Newcastle offense in check with steals.

Torrington’s second string entered the game in the final eight minutes of regulation with buckets by sophomores Aftyn Hager and Zaela Rios.
