TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers basketball team widened their 2025 winning streak to three games following a pair of victories against Mitchell, Nebraska and Burns during the weekend.
Opening the action on a high note, Torrington overwhelmed Mitchell by nearly 40 points, 63-25, on Thursday, January 16.
The Lady Blazers followed the win up with a crushing blow to 3A conference rival Burns, 52-15, on Friday.
“We had a busy week with seven total games between all of our teams,” coach Chris Strampe said. “Our girls were ready for the challenge and finished 7-0 between varsity, JV and ‘C’ team games. That was a fun moment for our program.”
Mitchell
The Lady Blazers kicked off the game against Mitchell with a 10-0 run, including buckets by senior Olive Osmera, junior Natalie Long and senior Teryn Stokes.
Mitchell scored before Torrington responded with a 10—1 run. Senior Madix McIntosh went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line and drained an outside shot. Long scored on a fastbreak and junior Kennedy Reinhardt tossed in a 3-pointer.
Torrington hammered away at Mitchell in the second quarter with 16 points to six. Long led offensively with six points while McIntosh and Stokes each tallied four.
The halftime score favored Torrington, 36-9.
The Lady Blazers topped Mitchell in scoring, 19-4, in the third quarter. Reinhardt set the pace offensively with nine points. Stokes converted an and-1 and scored a free throw to place Torrington ahead by 40 points, 53-13.
The Lady Blazer’s second string stepped onto the court to seal the win in the fourth, including points by sophomores Aftyn Hager, Zaela Rios, Kaia Jacobson and freshman Ellis Mortimore.
Three Lady Blazers scored double digits against Mitchell with 12 points apiece by Long, Stokes and Reinhardt. McIntosh contributed nine points, Osmera eight and Hager four.
Stokes pulled down double-digit rebounds as well with 10. Stokes and Long both grabbed three steals while Long delivered three assists.
“Our defensive effort was excellent as we held Mitchell to 13 points in the first three quarters,” Strampe said. “We play best when we are unselfish and that was the case in this game as three players led us in scoring with 12 points each. Teryn Stokes broke through with her best game of the year pulling down a double-double.”
Burns
Pulling out all the stops in the first quarter, the Lady Blazers netted 16 points to five by Burns. Long recorded six points in the opening eight minutes of regulation with five by Stokes, three from senior Jaycee Hurley and a bucket by Osmera.
Defensively, Torrington forced turnovers with steals by Hurley, Long, McIntosh and Stokes.
A tenacious Lady Blazer defense held Burns to single basket in the second quarter while the Torrington offense tossed in 13 points. Stokes, Reinhardt and Long each grabbed multiple steals while Reinhardt scored five points and Stokes netted four.
Torrington found itself up, 29-7, at halftime.
Torrington outpaced Burns, 17-6, in the third quarter. Long led the Lady Blazers in scoring with seven points while Reinhardt, Hurley, McIntosh, Jacobson and Stokes each tossed in two points.
Stokes opened the fourth quarter going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe and Long drained a deep outside shot. Hager topped scoring off with a free throw.
Long set the momentum for Torrington in scoring against Burns with 18 points. Stokes recorded 13 points, including seven of eight free throws (87.5 percent). Reinhardt contributed seven points, Hurley five and McIntosh four.
“We had another great defensive effort versus Burns, holding them to 15 points,” Strampe remarked. “Natalie Long did a great job limiting their best player while putting up an impressive performance with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals. She has really taken the next step this year and displayed great poise under pressure. Teryn Stokes continued her great play with 13 points and nine rebounds.”
