DOUGLAS – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers wrestling team set the momentum for 2025 with strong performances at the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament hosted by Douglas from January 10-11.
Torrington advanced to 14th place on the team leaderboard in a field of 31 programs from across Wyoming and Nebraska with the Lady Blazers tallying 68 points.
Freshman Catherine Hendricks led the way for Torrington, capturing gold in the 125-pound bracket. Hendricks pinned Kelly Walsh’s Allison Kissack 59 seconds into the quarterfinal match.
Moving up to the semifinals, Hendricks battled Gillian Holman of Glenrock into the second period before winning by fall at 3:10.
The first-place match pitted Hendricks against Tai McBride of Jackson Hole. Hendricks triumphed by pinning McBride with 1:26 to spare in the third period.
Sophomore Iree Hershey clinched fifth place at 155 pounds. Hershey pinned Kinzley Nusbaum of Burns/Pine Bluffs 1:25 into the fifth-place match.
In the 140-pound bracket, junior Aubree Fahrmeyer finished sixth. Fahrmeyer won the quarterfinal against Taylor Skillman of Tongue River at 1:20.
Freshman Makayla Burkart picked up six team points for Torrington in the 135-pound bracket.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Blazers won three of four matches against Scottsbluff in a dual on Thursday, January 9. Hendricks, Fahrmeyer and Hershey each pinned their opponents.
Up next, the Lady Blazers and Blazers wrestling teams board the bus to compete at the Skyview Tounament in Thornton, Colorado, on Saturday, January 18. The Wheatland Quad follows on January 21.
