RAWLINS – Accurate shooting from the free-throw line by the Torrington Lady Blazers clinched a 44-37 away victory against the Rawlins Lady Outlaws on Friday, February 28.

The Lady Blazers finished the regular season with a 5-0 conference record to seal the No. 2 berth for the upcoming regional championship in Glenrock this weekend.

“It is always tough to travel to Rawlins and play in that hostile environment, so I knew we would be in for a difficult game,” coach Chris Strampe said. “We struggled to shoot the ball and made a few uncharacteristic mistakes, which put us in a tight spot at the end of the game. Thankfully, we were able to step up and make some huge pressure free throws, especially by (senior) Jaycee Hurley and (junior) Natalie Long who combined to go 12-for12 in the fourth quarter. We needed a game like this to challenge us and I’m proud of how we were able to respond and pull out a victory.”

The Lady Blazers open regionals with a game against Glenrock (No. 7) at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

“It’s time to earn that trip to state,” Strampe added.

Senior Olive Osmera kicked off Friday’s game against Rawlins with a trey. Osmera and junior Kennedy Reinhardt both grabbed steals, setting up senior Teryn Stokes to score from inside the paint.

Long and Hurley each forced turnovers with steals and Hurley and McIntosh both scored once from the charity stripe to place Torrington up, 7-3, at the end of the first quarter.

A neck-and-neck second quarter saw both teams net nine points. Reinhardt, McIntosh and Hurley each scored on fastbreaks while Stokes tossed in a jumper and a free throw.

The Lady Blazers maintained the advantage by two possessions, 16-12, at halftime.

Rawlins pulled ahead, 22-20, early in the third quarter. A close-range shot by Reinhardt deadlocked the game at 22 points.

Long scooped up a steal and Reinhard scored again from inside the paint, returning the lead to Torrington, 24-22.

McIntosh went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line and Stokes netted a jumper to place Torrington ahead, 28-26, as the fourth quarter began.

The Lady Blazers clinched the win in the fourth quarter with the Torrington offense netting 16 points, primarily from the charity stripe, while holding Rawlins to 11.

Long paced the Lady Blazer offense in scoring against Rawlins with 10 points. Hurley collected nine points, Reinhardt eight, Stokes seven, McIntosh six and sophomore Kadence Schamel a free throw.

Stokes led on the boards with eight rebounds while Reinhardt totaled seven. Hurley snatched five steals.
