Lady Blazers defeat Worland at Gillette tournament

GILLETTE – The Torrington High School Lady Blazers marked the opening of the 2024-2025 winter season with a decisive 50-25 victory against 3A West rival Worland at the Gillette tournament on Thursday, December 12.

Torrington controlled the scoreboard for the first 24 minutes of regulation against the Lady Warriors to pull ahead by more than 20 points, 41-18, at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Blazers’ second string entered the game to round out the win in the final eight minutes of the game.

On Friday, Torrington squared off against a team from Bismark, North Dakota at the tournament and came up short by several possessions after four physical quarters, 30-21.

Torrington fell to 3A West opponent Cody, 69-24, in the final game of the tournament.

Worland 

The Lady Blazers left it all on the court in the first quarter against the Lady Warriors, netting 13 points while a gritty Torrington defense held Worland to three points.

Junior Natalie Long commenced scoring for the Lady Blazers with a layup. Fellow junior Kennedy Reinhardt drained an outside shot. 

Defensive pressure by seniors Madix McIntosh and Teryn Stokes resulted in a turnover, setting Long up to score an inside shot.

Senior Jaycee Hurley grabbed a steal and Long scored on a fastbreak. Stokes topped off scoring in the first quarter with a jumper.

Torrington outscored Worland, 14-8, in the second quarter. Reinhardt set the momentum offensively with five points. Long contributed four points while McIntosh and sophomore Zaela Rios each tossed in a bucket and Stokes sank a free throw. 

Defensively, Stokes and Hurley both picked up steals.

The halftime score favored Torrington, 27-11.

The Lady Blazers controlled the scoreboard in the third quarter, doubling Worland in scoring, 14-7.

A deep 3-pointer by Hurley placed Torrington ahead by 20 points, 35-15, midway into the third quarter. Sophomore Kadence Schamel entered the game and scored on two fastbreaks.

McIntosh snagged a steal and Long closed the third quarter with a layup.

The Lady Blazers entered the final eight minutes of regulation with a 23-point advantage, 41-18.

Torrington netted nine points in the fourth quarter to seven by Worland. McIntosh, Long and Schamel each scored on fastbreaks. Junior Kieana Gunhammer went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe and sophomore Aftyn Hager netted a free throw.

On defense, McIntosh, Long and Reinhardt each snatched a steal in the fourth.

The Lady Blazers finished the Worland game with a point spread among nine players. Long and Reinhardt both scored double digits with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

McIntosh and Schamel each contributed six points while Hurley tallied five, Stokes three, Gunhammer and Rios two and Hager one.
