TORRINGTON – Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Jose P. Chavez, 71, at 11 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2019, at St Rose Catholic Church with Father Andrew Duncan officiating.

Jose died Feb. 27, 2019, at home in Torrington and cremation has taken place. A rosary will be said Thursday at 6 p.m. at the church.

Jose was born Sept. 3, 1947 in Villa Ocapo, Mexic, to Procopio and Inez (Rendon) Chavez. He grew up in Mexico and joined the military there, serving for 10 years. He moved to the United States in 1976 to Albin, where he worked in a potato plant. 

He married Mary Lou Dominguez on July 15, 1976, in Torrington. He worked in construction, doing concrete work and building grain buildings. He later worked at the Holly Sugar Factory in the warehouse. He quit there in 1998 and went back to construction, where he worked until he retired in 2009. He still worked part time in construction.

Jose enjoyed gardening and cooking and was a member of St Rose Catholic Church.

Jose is survived by his wife Mary Lou of Torrington; two daughters: Sonia (Charles) Armstrong of Baton Rouge, La., and Alex Chavez of Torrington; a step-son Carlos (Rachel) Dominguez of Hobbs, N.M.; a step-daughter Juanita (German) Dominguez of New Providence, Penn.; one granddaughter Amelia Armstrong; eight step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; five brothers: Benjamin Chavez, Francisco Chavez and Jesus (Teresa) Chavez, all of Mexico, Miguel (Patricia) Chavez of Albin and Ambrosio (Dolores) Chavez of Torrington; two sisters: Guadalupe Chavez and Rosario Hignasio of Mexico. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
