GILLETTE – Both the Torrington High School girls and boys indoor track teams clinched sixth place at the Bronc Invite hosted by the Campbell County Recreation Field House in Gillette on Saturday, February 15.
The Torrington girls advanced to sixth place on the team leaderboard with 46 cumulative points. A small boys’ squad consisting of four athletes placed sixth overall with 13 points.
Junior Brooklyn Asmus captured her first gold medal for the season in the girls’ 200-meter dash. Asmus crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 25.78 seconds, beating the runner-up from Worland by 0.37 seconds.
Asmus went on to snag silver in the 55-meter dash, posting a time of 7.30 seconds.
In girls’ field events, junior Trishell Pontarolo snagged gold in the triple jump. Pontarolo hit a mark of 34 feet, 10 inches – more than eight inches ahead of the second-place finish from Thunder Basin.
“It was a smaller meet in Gillette this week,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “We had several PRs from athletes in field events and on the track. We are gearing toward the end of season and hopefully will have our best times and farthest marks in March for the state meet.”
Senior Callie Taylor clinched fourth place in the 1600-meters, clocking in at 6 minutes, 10.29 seconds.
Pontarolo picked up two additional top 10 placings, including eighth place in the girls’ 200-meters with a time of 28.37 seconds. Clearing 4-08 in the high jump, Pontarolo placed 10th in the event.
Senior Evan Hellus broke into the top five in a pair of boys’ field events. Hellus advanced to second place on the leaderboard in the long jump with a mark of 20-08 ½. The senior went on to bag fourth place in the triple jump, reaching 40-04.
