LARAMIE – The Torrington High School indoor track team posted strong performances at the 307 Invitational at UW’s War Memorial Field House on Saturday, February 1.

The Torrington girls’ team returned home with nine top 10 finishes in relays and individual events while the growing boys’ squad finished with two placings in the top 10.

“I was excited with how the kids showed up and performed in Laramie,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “Athletes stepped up and did a few different races throughout the day, mostly as a training session at 7,200 feet. This will hopefully transpire to better marks and faster times down the road.”

Junior Trishell Pontarolo garnered her second gold medal for the season and set a new Torrington High School indoor record in the girls’ triple jump at Laramie. Pontarolo advanced to first place on the leaderboard with a record-breaking leap of 36 feet, 3 inches, beating the runner-up from Natrona County High School by nearly three-and-a-half feet.

Allison Brummell held the previous record of 36-02 ¼ set in 2022.

In girls’ sprinting events, junior Brooklyn Asmus clinched silver in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meters. Asmus finished second in the 55-meters with a time of 7.46 seconds before crossing the finish line in second place in the 200-meters at 26.70 seconds.

Sophomore Bailey Mehling bagged bronze in the girls’ 400-meters, clocking in at 1 minute, 6.27 seconds. Mehling went on to take fifth place in the triple jump with a mark of 31-07 ½. Rounding out her top 10 finishes, Mehling came in seventh place in the 200-meters with a time of 28.90 seconds.

Timing the girls’ 55-meter hurdles in at 10.02 seconds, senior Jada Kaufman placed seventh.

Freshman Illyana Sanchez crossed the finish line in 10th place in the girls’ 400-meters, posting a time of 1:09.22.

Senior Evan Hellus paced the Torrington boys with two top five finishes in jumping events. Hellus advanced to third place on the long jump leaderboard, clearing 20-09 ½. Hellus went on to capture fifth place in the triple jump with a mark of 40-04.

Two girls’ relay teams broke into the top five. The 1600-meter sprint medley relay team – Kaufman, Mehling, sophomore Esperanza Chavez and senior Callie Taylor – snagged second place, clocking in at 5:15.10.

Asmus, Kaufman, Sanchez and sophomore Addisyn Wilkins clinched second place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:35.47.
