Indoor tracksters kick off season at Natrona County

Posted

CASPER – The Torrington High School indoor track team, including athletes from across Goshen County, opened the 2025 season with solid performances at the Natrona County High School Invitational on Saturday, January 18.

Team scores were not kept, though Torrington returned with plenty of hardware in its bag competing in a field against athletes from 3A and 4A classifications.

Junior Trishell Pontarolo captured gold in the girls’ triple jump, clearing 34 feet, 7 ½ inches. Pontarolo beat the runner-up from Natrona County by 1 foot, 10 inches.

“I’m pleased with our first contest out and the marks and times that we had,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “This weekend was a great baseline for us to start with.”

Torrington did not field any relays this weekend as the team looked to get athletes into individual events to establish times that will determine the composition for relay teams, Stienmetz added. The team will also include several additions to its boys’ squad this week, Stienmetz noted as well.

Pontarolo also clinched fifth place in the girls’ long jump with a leap measured in at 16-00.

In girls’ sprinting events, junior Brooklyn Asmus finished the finals for the 55-meter dash in second place, clocking in at 7.43 seconds. Asmus went on to garner fourth place in the 200-meters, posting a time of 26.93 seconds. Pontarolo placed eighth in the 200-meter finals at 28.96 seconds.

Freshman Illyana Sanchez snagged fifth place in the girls’ 400-meters, reaching the finish line with a time of 1 minute, 7.53 seconds. Sophomore Bailey Mehling took seventh place in the 400-meters, timing in at 1:07.95.

Mehling scooped up bronze in the girls’ long jump with a mark of 32-08 ½.

Clocking the girls’ 800-meters in at 2:52.84, senior Callie Taylor placed eighth in the event. Taylor went on to finish ninth in the 1600-meters, crossing the finish line in 6:36.33.

In the girls’ 55-meter hurdles, senior Jada Kaufman led the Goshen County pack with a fifth-place finish timed in at 10.22 seconds.

Sophomore Connor Coxbill represented Torrington and Goshen County in the boys’ division, placing 18th in the 800-meters at 2:37.19. Coxbill secured 21st place in the boys’ long jump, reaching a mark of 29-06 ½.
