Indoor track gears up for state

GILLETTE – The Torrington High School (THS) indoor track team rounded out the regular season with a strong showing at the Sheridan Invitational hosted by the Campbell County Recreation Center in Gillette on February 22.

Up next for the team are the State Indoor Track and Field Championships in Gillette from February 29 to March 1.

“This was a good meet for us,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “We put together more relay teams to give us options at state, and the girl athletes really stepped up to help out in new events. I am excited about what the team will do this weekend.”

Sophomore Brooklyn Asmus won the girls’ varsity 200-meter dash, clocking in at 25.68 seconds. Asmus also snagged second place in the 55-meter dash, posting a time of 7.38 seconds. 

Senior Alyssa Wondercheck captured gold in the girls’ long jump, hitting a mark of 17 feet, 2 ¾ inches. Wondercheck also secured sixth place in the 55-meter dash at 7.69 seconds.

Sophomore Trishell Pontarolo clinched second place in the girls’ triple jump with a leap measuring 34-05 ¾. Pontarolo went on to place eighth in the long jump at 15-02 ¼.

Sophomore Natalie Hawes snapped up fifth place in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles, clocking in at 9.41 seconds.

Senior Harper Boche achieved fifth place in the girls’ shot put, hitting a mark of 37-04 ¼. Fellow senior Tylar Stoddard captured sixth place in the girls’ triple jump, leaping 32-05 ½. 

In boys’ throwing events, the three seniors on the team – Tyler Bennick, Trey Parriott and Brayden Frazier – broke into the top 10.

Bennick led the pack in second place with a toss of 53-06 ½. Parriott came in fourth place at 45-11 ¾ with Frazier in sixth at 44-08 ½.

In distance events, senior Zabdiel Munoz took fourth place in the 800-meters, posting a time of 2:12.35. Munoz came in ninth place in the 1600-meter with a sub-5-minute time of 4:53.97.

In the boys’ long jump, sophomore Landon Fuller picked up ninth place, clearing 19-02 ¼.

Asmus, Wondercheck, Pontarolo and Hawes garnered second place in the girls’ 4x200-meter relay, posting a new THS indoor track record of 1 minute, 48.95 seconds.

Asmus, Hawes, Pontarolo and Wondercheck snapped up first place in the 4x400-meter relay, timing in at 4:23.94.

The girls’ 4x800-meter relay team – sophomore Anna Frederick, junior Taylor Hansen, sophomore Natalie Lira and junior Angie Logsdon – finished first at 12:48.74.
