Brothwell places third at Riverton tournament

RIVERTON – Josie Houk led the Lingle-Fort Laramie/Southeast wrestling team bringing home the much sought-after championship belt each winner gets for winning the annual Ron Thon Invite.

Houk won the 155-pound bracket, finishing the weekend 4-0.

She picked up pins over Star Valley’s Brooke Schwab, Cheyenne East’s Kaelyn Ronnau and Evanston’s Marty Dick to reach the championship match.

In Houk’s final match of the weekend, she defeated Kelly Walsh’s Skylee Gangwish by an 11-8 decision. Houk is now 23-1 on the season.

The only other member of the LFLSE to place at the varsity level was Kaleb Brothwell.

Brothwell finished third at 138 pounds going 5-1 on the weekend.

The junior opened the weekend with a 19-5 major decision win over Campbell County’s Edward Garduno and a pin over Natrona County’s Kaden Thornsberry. Brothwell reached the semifinal round with a 13-0 major decision over Buffalo’s Zander Tass.

In the semifinal round, Brothwell suffered his only loss fo the weekend to Green River’s Kale Knezovich in a 4-2 decision.

Brothwell bounced back with a 17-2 technical fall win over Evanston’s Kyson Hamilton to move into the third-place match. In his final match of the weekend, Brothwell earned his second consecutive technical fall victory to finish third.

Louden Bremer was the only other LFLSE varsity wrestler to pick up a win. Bremer went 2-2 with a 10-6 win over Cheyenne East’s Daven Hames and picked up an injury default win over Mountain View’s Gus Roden.

As a team, LFLSE finished tied for 24th with 29 points out of more than 40 teams who took part in the Ron Thon Invite. Sheridan won the team title with 212 points, while Green River was second with 210.5. Thunder Basin was third with 197.

In the junior varsity division, Tiegan Thompson and Emmett Coxbill placed in the top six for LFLSE.

Thompson finished third 5-1 weekend. In his final match of the weekend, Thompson picked up an 11-9 sudden victory over Thunder Basin’s Drayden Johnson in the 170-pound bracket.

At 220 pounds, Coxbill went 2-3. He reached the semifinal round before suffering his first loss of the weekend. Coxbill ended up getting pinned in his two next matches to finish sixth.

Gideon Boyd (106), Mason Sorensen (120), William Feyereisen (138), Wyatt Gladson (145), Jaden VanGundy (152), Gage Gibson (160), Lance York (160), Alec DeMarce (182) and Colter McFarlin (220) also picked up wins for LFLSE JV team.

LFLSE hosts the Southeast Duals on Saturday, Feb. 4. Action gets underway at 9 a.m. in Yoder.
