Honoring the spirit

FORT LARAMIE – One-hundred and fifty years ago this month, the first of several tribal nations signed the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie – an agreement between the U.S. government and sovereign tribal nations of the Northern Great Plains, which promised land ownership, hunting rights and effectively ended Red Cloud’s War along the Bozeman Trail.

On April 28, Fort Laramie National Historic Site will, once again, host tribes from the Northern Great Plains – along with around 300 horses – and representatives from U.S. and state governments, including South Dakota and Nebraska, in recognition of the 1868 treaty.

The event, called “Honoring the Spirit,” aims to “recognize the intent of the original negotiators, acknowledge the negative impacts that resulted, and (strategize) to seek solutions in a forward-looking manner,” said Eric Valencia, FLNHS Chief of Interpretation and
Visitor Services.
