Fuller takes bronze at state

Posted

CASPER – Five athletes represented the combined Lingle-Fort Laramie/Southeast (LFL/SE) girls’ wrestling team at the state championships in Casper from February 27-March 1 with LFL/SE picking up 23rd place out of 45 teams.

LFL/SE’s grapplers collected 31 team points with junior Hallie Fuller reaching the podium by clinching bronze in the 140-pound bracket.

“I was really proud of how our kids competed at the state tournament this weekend,” coach Brandon Gifford said. “We started rough and had some matches that didn’t go our way. However, we have a saying with our team – ‘Go get the next best thing’ – and our kids stepped up and were able to wrestle back. That is a testament to our kids’ work ethic and commitment to their goals. Having the ability to persevere in the face of adversity is an important skill that our athletes have. Hallie Fuller did a great job going back to get third after a disappointment in the semifinals. She wrestled hard and is a true example of that perseverance.”

Fuller commenced the state tournament at 140 pounds with a win by fall against Newcastle’s Brylee Caster at 1 minute, 26 seconds into the first round.

Progressing to the quarterfinals, Fuller made quick work of Tawny Bertolini of Greybull with a pin at 1:20.

Fuller fell in the semifinals before battling back to win the consolation semifinals by pinning Brylee Caster  midway into the second period of the consolation semifinals.

Squaring off against Cheyenne Central’s Rachel Gertsch in the third-place match, Fuller fought her opponent into the second period before securing a pin at 2:10.

Junior Kennedi Blevins contributed six points to the LFL/SE girls’ final tally in the 105-pound division. Blevins pinned Chrislyn Carlson of Kemmerer 40 seconds into the first consolation rounds and felled Cheyenne East’s Orianna Gonzalez at 2:53 in the second consolation match.

Sophomore Trinity Martin collected three team points with a win by fall against Kinzley Nubaum of Burns-Pine Bluffs in the first consolation round at 155 pounds.
