Five THS golfers snag all-conference honors

BUFFALO – The Torrington High School golf team entered the postseason with solid performances at the 3A East Regional Tournament hosted by Buffalo on Thursday and Friday, September 12-13.

Four athletes from Goshen County broke into the top 10 following two days of competition at the Buffalo Golf Club, capturing 3A all-conference honors in the process.

In boys’ varsity, senior Mason Wilkes snagged sixth place on the leaderboard, shooting a two-day total of 172 strokes. Wilson shot consistently at 86 on both days.

Junior Conner Correll also earned all-conference accolades, placing ninth with a two-day score of 180. Correll progressed from 97 strokes in the first round to 83 in the second.

Fellow senior Madyson Banister led the Goshen County pack in girls’ varsity, advancing to eighth place on the leaderboard with a combined score of 211. Banister improved from 110 strokes in the first round to 101 in the second.

Sara Birdsall, also a senior, came in ninth place, shooting 223 strokes. Birdsall progressed from 116 on Thursday to 107 in the second round.

Senior Kaleigh Waymire rounded out all-conference performances with a 10th place finish at 223. Waymire also improved considerably over the course of two days, with 118 strokes on Thursday and 105 on Friday.

“Buffalo’s course was very tough with the wind a quick greens,” coach Jeff Halley said. “I was really excited for so many of our kids to get in the top 10 and be all-conference. I thought most of the kids really battled well and we are in a good place heading into state.

Golfers compete at the 3A Wyoming State Golf Championships hosted by Rochelle Ranch in Rawlins on September 20-21.

“It’s exciting to see our kids  improve and possibly make some noise this week on the big stage,” Halley added.
