GILLETTE – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers battled Gillette point-for-point through most of regulation at the away game hosted by the Lady Pronghorn on Tuesday, January 14.
EWC led at halftime by one possession, 34-32. The lead bounced back and forth in the third quarter with Gillette pulling up, 54-51, as the final quarter commenced.
The game tied at 56 early in the fourth quarter until Gillette regained the lead and remained ahead by one or two possessions. An 11-3 run by the Lady Pronghorns in the final minutes or regulation resulted in a 78-69 win for Gillette College.
Gillette won the first quarter, 17-10.
The Lady Lancers battled back in the second quarter. A 9-point run by freshman Yaiza Paredes tied the game at 17 points and pulled the Lady Lancers ahead, 19-17.
The lead then switched hands with each possession. Sophomore Leamsi Acuna netted a pair of close-range shots and the game deadlocked at 24. Paredes took possession and scored from inside the perimeter to tie the game once again at 26.
Sophomore Josephine Vourliotis drained a deep 3-pointer and EWC regained the initiative, 29-28.
An outside shot by sophomore Nikolina Vukcevic placed the Lady Lancers up, 32-30. Acuna scored a jumper and EWC led at halftime, 34-32.
The Lady Lancers controlled the scoreboard by several possessions for most of the third quarter with points by Paredes, Vukcevic, Vourliotis and a pair of free throws from freshman Ariadna Martinez.
Sophomore Boden Liljedahl sank a 3-pointer with one minute remaining in the third quarter to keep EWC ahead, 51-49.
The Lady Pronghorn responded with a five-point run to retake the lead, 54-51, as the fourth quarter opened.
The game reached a final stalemate at 56 points following an outside shot by Paredes.
Gillette edged up and maintained the advantage by one or two possessions until the Lady Pronghorn widened their lead with a late 11-3 run.
Three Lady Lancers scored double digits against Gillette College, led by Paredes with 21, Vukcevic 17 and sophomore Aliya Tripp 11. Acuna netted six points, Liljedahl and Vouliotis both tallied five while Martinez rounded out the total with four.
Paredes went double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds. Acuna shared the ball for nine assists while Acuna and Tripp both grabbed two steals.
The Lady Lancers played LCCC in Cheyenne on Thursday, January 19. Results were not available at press time.
