Eight Lancer athletes made it back to the short-go on Sunday. The Lancer men’s team placed fourth for the weekend with 325 points.

Overall, it was a great weekend for the Lancer’s hometown rodeo.

“I’m proud of our whole team,” coach Whit Peterson said. “It’s a team effort to put together a rodeo. We competed well and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Eli Leppell, a freshman from Keene, North Dakota, had an excellent weekend in bull riding. On Friday night, the freshman won the long-go with a 75-point ride to land the hometown cowboy the average and the championship buckle in bull riding.

“It was a good weekend to represent our hometown rodeo,” Leppell said.

Griffin Grooms, a freshman from Oglala, South Dakota, had a solid weekend in barrel racing. In the long-go, Grooms posted a 15.45-second run, tying for third and fourth with EWC sophomore Isabell Camino (from Buffalo).

In the short-go, Grooms kept it consistent with a 15.41-second run to place third in the average.

Camino had a 15.69-second run in the short-go, placing seventh.

Camryn Kocian, a sophomore from Brainard, Nebraska, had a strong start to the weekend with a 15.54-second run in the long-go for barrel racing. Kocian ended up ninth in the average for the weekend after having some tough luck in the short-go.

In calf roping, sophomore Carter Anderson of Merriman, Nebraska, put down a 10.1-second run to land sixth place coming into the short-go. On Sunday, Anderson had an 11.6-second run to place third in the average.

It was a great weekend on the rough stock end. In saddle bronc riding, two Lancers qualified for the short-go on Sunday.

Trey Tuplin, a freshman from Saskatchewan, scored a 65-point ride in the long round to place seventh and eighth. In the short round, the freshman had a 57-point ride to place sixth in the average for the weekend.

Trey Shadlock, also a freshman from Saskatchewan, posted a 70-point ride in the saddle bronc riding long-go and a 75-point ride in the short-go to place third in the average.

“It was a great pen of horses and a great weekend,” Shadlock said. “I just focused on all gas, no breaks.”

In bareback riding, Cian Daly, a freshman from Saskatchewan, scored a 69-point ride on Friday to place fifth in the long-go.

Up next, the Lancers compete at the Skyline Stampede hosted by Colorado State University in Fort Collins from April 4-6.
