STERLING, COLORADO – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers golf team captured its second consecutive season win at a tournament hosted by Northeastern Junior College from September 19-20.

Shooting 711 strokes over two days, the Lady Lancers finished ahead of Central Wyoming College in second place at 730, Otero College in third (735) and the host school in fourth (771).

In the men’s division, the Lancers advanced to second place on the team leaderboard with a cumulative total of 579 strokes – a single stroke behind the first-place team, Otero College, at 578.

The Lancers finished ahead of Central Wyoming College (584), Northeastern Junior College (629), McCook Community College (629), North Platte Community College (632) and Lamar Community College (640).

“Overall, it was another good week for both the men and women,” coach Zach Smith said. “I’m very pleased with the girls’ effort again this week – earning their second win in a row. The guys played pretty well, too, especially the second team. I think the depth this year on the guys’ team should provide some good competition within the team. Qualifying has been tight, which I hope leads to the guys working harder and harder on their game.”

Five Lady Lancers broke into the top 10 at Northeastern, led by Jessica Applegarth and Elliann Irick in a tie for fifth place at 176 strokes. Applegarth shot 88 on both Thursday and Friday. Irick tallied 89 strokes in the first round, progressing to 87 in the second.

Georgie Lou Paterakis came in eighth place, shooting 178 over two days. Paterakis shot 83 on Thursday and 95 on Friday.

Bailey Watson and Shayla Clayton tied for 10th place with 186 strokes apiece. Watson improved from 95 strokes in the first round to 91 in the second. Clayton also advanced on the leaderboard from 96 strokes on Thursday to 90 on Friday.

Four EWC men finished in the top 10 at the tournament. Josh Lane, Freddie Dancox and Tytan Birchall tied for third place at 141 strokes (one under par). Lane and Dancox both shot 70 in the first round and 71 in the second. Brichall improved from 72 strokes on Thursday to 69 on Friday.

Taiki Sugawara finished eighth with a two-day tally of 144 strokes (+2). Sugawara shot consistently with 73 strokes in the first round and 71 in the second.
