EWC golf sweeps McCook

MCCOOK, NEBRASKA – Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) men’s and women’s golf teams swept the McCook Community College tournament from March 27-28.

The EWC men finished the tournament at the top of the team leaderboard with a -14. Otero College finished second with a +8, followed by McCook Community College at +38. The Lady Lancers also finished at the top of the leaderboard, followed by North Platte Community College.

“Both teams played great this week,” coach Zach Smith said.

The EWC men delivered an impressive performance with five team members finishing in the top 10. Birchall won the tournament with a -5, followed by teammate Joshua Chapman, who tied for second place at -4.

Lancers Taiki Sugawara and Braylon Bingham tied for fourth place with a -1. Coltin Powell took eighth place with a +3. Other Lancers competing in McCook included Freddie Dancox, Jordan Hunt, Mathis Fortin, Josh Lance, Jax Oviatt, and Jamie Lambert.

“I don’t know that the men’s team has ever finished under par at the McCook Invite, let alone -14,” Smith said. “The guys played great both days, especially Tytan (Birchall), when he fired a -8, 64 on day two. That’s an incredible round anywhere, particularly at such a tough course like Heritage Hills. It was a special tournament for the guys.”

In the women’s competition, Jessica Applegrath finished the tournament on the top of the leaderboard with a +15, followed by teammates Elliann Irick and Bailey Watson, who tied for second with a +22.

Shayla Clayton finished in fourth place with a +31, with teammates Georgie Lou Paterakis and Halle Allen tied for fifth at +33. Lancer Quinlann Yeager tied for 10th place with a +61.

“The girls played incredibly, too,” Smith said. “Jessica (Applegrath) played great in the fall and followed it up with another great spring performance. Especially since she felt terrible on day two and managed to not only finish the tournament but play well again on the second day to win the tournament. Most players would have never teed off the second day if they felt like she did, but she pushed through it.”

“The girls took the top six individual spots, which shows just how strong they played,” Smith said.
