PHOENIX, Ariz. – Torrington’s Caleigh Essert competed in the girls’ 15-18-year-old division at the Antigua Milt Coggins tournament in Phoenix, taking second.
“I thought I played great,” Essert said. “I don’t have any bad thoughts about how I played. I did great.”
Essert started the three-day tournament with a 76, putting her in first at the end of the day by two strokes. On the second day, she shot a 77 at the Encanto Golf Club and ended with a two-day score of 153. Heading into the final day, Essert led the field by one stroke.

Brooke Beyer from Mesa, Ariz. shot a 72 on the third day and came from third to first, winning with a three-day score of 229. Reyna Hernandez turned in a 236 after the three days to take third.
The action in Phoenix was the first time Essert has been in a competition since the spring golf season with the Blazers. There were around 100 total participants at the three-day tournament.
“I stay a lot more focused against competition,” Essert said. “I can learn from them and it makes me a better golfer. I love the competition.”
Essert returns to competitive action in Sheridan for a tournament on Monday and Tuesday. She also heads to Laramie Friday-Saturday for the state amateur tournament.
