Dear Editor,

After receiving several flyers in the mail defaming our current representative, Allen Slagle House District #2, and wondering how and why he voted on several bills, I called him to clarify. This is what he told me:

“1. HB0069 which I co-sponsored was not about locking up natural resources, but about private property rights. Basically, it said that if the surface landowner was different from the permit holder or the mineral owner and the permit or reclamation plan was being changed, the surface landowner had to give written consent.

 2. HB0166 was an ESA bill that begins to increase school choice. I voted against it because it promotes preschool. Second, it only applies to some students based on parental income. Third, as I read the constitution it is questionable if it passes constitutional muster. Specifically, Article 3 section 36. Prohibited Appropriations - “No appropriation shall be made for charitable, industrial, educational or benevolent purposes to any person, corporation or community not under the absolute control of the state, nor to any denominational or sectarian institution or association. “

3. HB0066 was a bill prohibiting mask, vaccine and testing discrimination. This was a tough bill for me, because it pitted the rights of individuals against the rights of business owners who are individuals many times. I know there are many opinions out there, but I feel that rights of an individual trump the rights of a business owner, who has no business telling you to wear a mask for your own protection or knowing if you have been vaccinated or tested.”

The out of state Political Action Committees seem to have no restrictions on misrepresentation or outright lies. The candidates have no control over what the PACs, that supposedly represent them, send out. Let’s throw the mailings in the garbage and talk directly to the candidates themselves.

Respectfully,
