Cyclones punch in 13th win

YODER – The Southeast High School Cyclones cruised past Guernsey-Sunrise, 58-30, at home on Tuesday, February 18 to punch in Southeast’s 13th  victory for the season.

The Cyclones came out on fire in the first quarter to overwhelm Guernsey, 15-5. Southeast never looked back and the Cyclones controlled the scoreboard for the next three quarters.

“It was a good night for our seniors,” coach Craig Leithead said. “The boys played hard and together as a team. We look forward to the postseason.”

The Cyclones honored the five seniors on the team on Tuesday, recognizing the four year contributions of Drew Boche, Sebastian Brumley, Ayden Desmond, Ayden Shimic and Kannon Tippetts. 

“These seniors started as freshmen when I started coaching,” Leithead added. “It’s been really fun coaching these guys.”

A four-quarter sweep

The game opened with a 5-0 run by Guernsey before the Cyclones closed ranks.

Boche grabbed a steal and junior T.J. Moats blocked an attempted shot by the Vikings.

Tippetts took possession and tossed in a close-range shot.

Junior Beaux Shimic forced a turnover on Guernsey’s ensuing possession with a steal and Tippetts netted a free throw.

Desmond wrangled a steal, raced down the court and dunked the ball to tie the game, 5-5.

Southeast went on a 10-point run to close out the first quarter. Tippetts found an opening in the perimeter to score.

Moats and Desmond both reached up for blocks and Ayden Shimic snatched a steal.

Desmond sank an inside shot and Ayden Shimic picked up another steal.

Tippetts scored from inside the perimeter. Moats blocked another shot by the Vikings and Desmond forced two turnovers with steals.

Desmond went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Beaux Shimic scooped up a steal, setting Tippetts up to score from the paint.

The scoreboard favored Southeast by three times the points of its opponent, 15-5, at the end of the first quarter.

Southeast more than quadrupled Guernsey in scoring in the second quarter, 21-5.

Beaux Shimic paced the Cyclones offense with eight points while Tippetts collected seven. Junior Spencer Booth lined up for a trey and Desmond netted a free throw and a jumper.

On defense, Desmond, Beaux Shimic, Tippetts and junior Chase Sauer each rustled steals in the second.

Southeast led, 36-10, at halftime.

Southeast continued to outscore Guernsey, 15-7, in the third quarter. Desmond tallied eight more points for the Cyclones. Ayden Shimic fired off a 3-pointer and Tippetts and Booth both contributed a bucket.

Defensively, Ayden Shimic, Beaux Shimic and Desmond each picked up steals while Sauer reached up for a big block.

The Cyclones remained up, 51-17, as the fourth quarter commenced.

Southeast topped off its win with seven points in the fourth quarter. Boche and junior Liam Haas both drained close-range shots while Booth tossed in a free throw. Brumley grabbed a steal and Sauer made another block.

Tippetts set the momentum for the Cyclones offense against Guernsey with 18 points. Desmond contributed 17 points with eight apiece by Beaux Shimic and Booth. Ayden Shimic tallied three points and Boche and Haas both netted two.

Desmond led on the boards with seven rebounds. Moats and Haas both pulled down four rebounds while Tippetts and Sauer each totaled three.
