YODER – After the week one win over Riverside, Southeast coach Mark Bullington knew his team had some areas which needed cleaning up.

In week two, Bullington felt like his team took a step forward in that direction with a 34-7 victory over the Wright Panthers.

“We did, but sometimes, we score seven points and then we go brain dead,” Southeast coach Mark Bullington said. “We then start freelancing, as we call it, and start not doing our assignments.”

The result was some big runs from Wright despite being held out of the end zone until late in the second quarter.

“After that, we looked pretty solid, especially on D,” Bullington said.

The Cyclones received the opening kick and never trailed en route to their second win of the season on Friday afternoon at Teeters Memorial Field.

Southeast chewed up half of the opening quarter with a 73-yard drive mostly through the running game. The drive was capped off with a pass from junior quarterback Ayden Desmond to sophomore tight end TJ Moats.

After the teams traded possession to end the first quarter and early moments of the second quarter, Southeast turned the ball over on downs at the Wright 6-yard line. On the second play of the drive, the Wright quarterback mishandled a snap, and senior defensive end Tiegen Thompson fell on the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

“Both of those guys, (Thompson) and TJ (Moats), it’s hard to get outside on those two big dudes,” Bullington said.

Thompson later blocked punt, setting up a short field for the Southeast offense, and Desmond sprinted 40-yards for a touchdown.

With a 21-0 lead, Southeast defense allowed Wright to convert on fourth down to keep a drive alive, and with 2:09 left before halftime, the visiting Panthers got on the scoreboard.

It proved to be the only score of the game for Wright, but Southeast answered with a score of their own less than 30 seconds later. 

Desmond broke free a 46-yard run, and after the failed point after, the Cyclones headed to halftime up 27-7.

Coming out of the break, the Southeast defense forced Wright to punt again, and the Cyclones drove 60 yards to the end zone.

Desmond connected with senior tight end Cole Sauer on a 13-yard pass for what proved to be the game’s final score.

Bullington said the best thing for the team on Friday was the fact they played a lot of kids.

“We were rotating our offensive and defensive lines, and towards the end we were a lot fresher than we were last week,” he said.

Southeast (2-0 overall and 1-0 in the 1A 9-Man East) hits the road for the first time this season, and it will also be the first game the Cyclones have played under the lights this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
