TORRINGTON – Both the Cubs and Marlins reached the Torrington City Little League Championship game with walk-off victories in the semifinal round.

The Cubs defeated the Cardinals 3-2, while the Marlins beat the Giants 4-3.

In the prior three regular season meetings, the Marlins scored wins over the Cubs to come into the game with an undefeated record. However, when it mattered the most, the Cubs picked up the win in the championship game 12-2 over the Marlins on Tuesday on Abe Correa Field at the Torrington Sports Complex.

In the first inning, both teams left runners in scoring position, but it wasn’t until the top of the second when the Cubs plated their first run of the game.

Edgar Vasquez led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Colby Yorges walked, while Patrick Mortimore and Barrett Bruch singled to load the bases for the Cubs. An error on a ground ball by Brody Shields added a second Cub run. Cubs got two more runs in the inning courtesy of a wild pitch and a passed ball.

In the bottom of the fourth, Owen Curry opened the Marlins’ half of the inning with a double. Hudson Hoffman and Kane Correa singled to cut the deficit to 5-2. 

The Cubs got out of the inning with three straight outs and kept the offense going in the top of the fifth.

Jaxton Hatley was hit by a pitch, Yorges and Mortimore walked to load the bases. Bruch singled, driving in two runs, and Shields fly ball drove in another run courtesy of an error. Easton Desmond ground ball drove the Cubs’ 10th run.

In the top of the sixth, another Marlins error aided two more runs to cross for the Cubs.

Bruch led the Cubs with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Mortimore added two hits.

Bruch was also the winning pitcher, striking out eight in the complete game effort.

Hoffman led the Marlins with a 3-for-3 day at the plate. Correa drove in the team’s only runs.

Curry and Correa teamed up for 14 strike outs, pitching three innings each.

All-Star teams announced

The Torrington Little League All-Stars were recently announced. The 9–10-year-old team includes: Preston Stratton, Caden Ryall, Keaton Wilkie, Jax Bruch, Gunner Werning, Hudson Evans, Hudson Hoffman, Reed Curry, Cassius Gonzalez, Jacob Hibben, Owen Shimic and Chase Baker. Kevin Evans, Mark Stratton and Clint Werning will coach the team.

Meanwhile, the 11-12-year-old Torrington All-Star team will be comprised of Patrick Mortimore, Brody Shields, Barrett Bruch, Colby Groene, Case Gonzalez, Owen Curry, Kane Correa, Ebin Hunter, Bryce Booth, Asher Mattis, Chase Moeller and Marek Nunnes. Rob Mortimore, Grant Curry and Matt Mattis will coach the team.

The 11-12-year-old team is scheduled to play Laramie at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 17 in the first round of the District No. 2 Tournament. The 9-10-year-old team has a first-round bye and will play the winner of Laramie and Platte County at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18.
