TORRINGTON – Despite a solid effort by the Torrington High School Blazers to close a large first-quarter lead by the Buffalo Bison at home on Saturday, February 8, Torrington ultimately came up short at the final buzzer, 57-40.
The Blazers remain in the No. 3 spot in the 3A East with a 3-2 conference record and 6-7 overall record.
“We had a rough first quarter that put is in a tough spot to recover from,” coach Logan Barker said. “The boys put tougher an efficient second quarter to get the ballgame within reach but unfortunately it was not enough to overcome the initial deficit. Ultimately, this loss falls on me as their coach. We have a busy week ahead with three games, including a home game on Tuesday against Bridgeport, Friday against Douglas (away) and Saturday against Newcastle (home).”
Buffalo opened regulation with a 15-0 run to lead, 17-3, at the end of the first quarter.
Torrington battled back in the second quarter, topping the Bison in scoring, 14-9. Junior Landre Greiman led the Blazers offense in the second with eight points while seniors Ryan Moorehouse and Mac Hibben and junior Kaleb Booth each contributed a bucket.
The Blazers put a significant dent in Buffalo’s lead in the second quarter, narrowing it from 15 points to nine at halftime, 26-17.
Torrington further reduced Buffalo’s lead to two possessions, 26-20, early in the third quarter with a 3-pointer by senior Weston Dyer.
The Blazers defense shut out Buffalo on the Bison’s ensuing three possessions with a block from Moorehouse and steals by Dyer and sophomore Julian Stromski.
Hibben tallied a pair of close-range shot before Buffalo widened its lead, 43-26, with another points run late in the third quarter.
Both teams tossed in 14 points in a physical fourth quarter. Dyer paced the Blazers offense with six points. Hibben drained a trey, Kramer collected a jumper and a free throw and senior Brayden Hime scored from inside the paint.
Dyer led Torrington in scoring against Buffalo with 12 points. Hibben also tallied double digits at 11 points. Greiman contributed eight points, Kramer three with two apiece by Moorehouse, Booth and Hime.
On the boards, Greiman pulled down 10 rebounds. Greiman delivered four assists while Hibben wrangled three steals. Moorehouse and Hime each reached up for one block.
