Blazers drop game in heartbreaker to Douglas

Posted

DOUGLAS – The final week of the regular season pitted the Torrington High School Blazers against the Douglas Bearcats at an away game on Friday, October 25.

A physical, neck-and-neck first half ended in a 21-21 stalemate. Douglas took control of the scoreboard in the third quarter with a single touchdown. Despite a battle by Torrington to close the gap in the fourth quarter, the Blazers fell short by one possession, 28-21.

Torrington’s previous success during the season, including a three-game winning streak against conference rivals Lander, Rawlins and Buffalo, secured a playoffs berth for the Blazers.

Torrington rounded out the regular season as the No. 3 seed in the 3A East, posting a 3-2 conference record and a 5-4 overall record.

The 3A playoffs open with Torrington traveling to play Cody, the No. 2 seed in the west, on Friday, November 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

“We came out very successful early in the first half,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “Douglas fought back to tie the game at halftime and went on to score in the third quarter. We couldn’t capitalize on opportunities in the second half. It was frustrating to win the turnover battle but loose on the scoreboard. We need to improve our execution and work on tackling from special teams to defense. This week, we will be back to the basics as we work to hone our skills.”

Sophomore Drew Kramer drove in two of Torrington’s three touchdowns with junior Colby Sandusky rushing into the end zone for the third touchdown.

Junior Holden Hackett lined up three kicks for points after touchdown.

Overall, the Blazers tallied 81 yards rushing against Douglas, led by Sandusky with 65 yards on eight carries. Kramer recorded 11 yards rushing on five carries and senior Nounou Braddy five yards on three carries.

Senior quarterback Ryan Moorehouse completed eight passes for 167 yards. Fellow senior Mac Hibben caught four passes for 61 yards while junior Landre Greiman caught three passes for 75 yards. Kramer was on the receiving end of one pass for 31 yards.

Defensively, senior Kaden Romig led with 20 points, including 16 tackles and one for loss. Braddy contributed 10 tackles, Greiman nine, senior Jeramiah Haffner seven with six apiece by senior Nathaniel Stull, senior Andrew Haffner and Sandusky.

Sandusky, Andrew Haffner and Kramer each tallied one tackle for loss. Sophomore Beau Martinez recovered a fumble and Hibben leapt up and intercepted a pass by Douglas in the first quarter.
