TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School Blazers football team successfully defended their home turf for a second straight week with a 35-7 victory against Cheyenne Central’s junior varsity squad on Thursday, September 12.
Back-to-back touchdowns by the Blazers in the first 13 minutes of regulation resulted in a 14-0 lead for Torrington early in the second quarter.
Central responded by reaching the end zone on the ensuing possession, narrowing Torrington’s lead, 14-7.
The Blazers rallied with a third touchdown late in the second quarter, placing Torrington up, 21-7, at halftime.
The Blazers sealed their victory with two touchdowns in the third quarter while an airtight Torrington defense shut down Central in the second half.
“I thought defensively we did a great job of pursuing to the ball and being more assignment sharp,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “We have players flying all around making plays and a lot of that is credit to the big guys up front, led by (senior) Kaden Romig this last game. Offensively, we had three scores by one kid a week before and three by another kid this week. (Junior) Colby Sandusky ran the ball well and had a touchdown reception that he was determined to catch. We keep getting better each week.”
The Blazers prevented Central from scoring on Cheyenne’s opening drive with tackles by Sandusky, senior Nathaniel Stull, senior Jeramiah Haffner, senior Andrew Haffner and senior Nounou Braddy. Senior Brayden Hime sacked Central’s quarterback behind the line of scrimmage and Cheyenne punted.
Torrington took possession and found its offensive momentum when senior quarterback Ryan Moorehouse completed a 35-yard pass to sophomore Drew Kramer on the Blazers’ first play.
Braddy, Sandusky and junior Landre Greiman drove the ball past Central’s 10-yard line over the next plays. Moorehouse then passed the ball to Sandusky to complete a nine-yard touchdown play.
A good kick by junior Holden Hackett widened the Blazers’ lead, 7-0.
Cheyenne lost possession on its first play when Stull intercepted a pass and the ball returned to Torrington.
Moorehouse completed passes to seniors Tyler Nicolay and Mac Hibben as the first quarter ended.
In the opening moments of the second quarter, Greiman took a handoff from Moorehouse and sprinted 58 yards into the end zone for touchdown No. 2. Hackett kicked the ball between the goalposts and Torrington remained ahead, 14-0.
Central put points on the scoreboard with a touchdown late in the second quarter, reducing Torrington’s lead, 14-7.
Following a delay due to lightening, Torrington recovered a fumble by Cheyenne and regained possession.
Sandusky took the handoff and charged up the middle for eight yards into the end zone for the Blazers’ third touchdown. Hackett made good on the extra point.
The Torrington defense shut down Cheyenne’s subsequent drive with tackles by Greiman and Andrew Haffner and the Blazers headed for the locker rooms up, 21-7.
The Blazers opened the second half in possession. Moorehouse wound up a pass to Hibben. Breaking tackle, Hibben raced into the end zone, completing a 41-yard pass play for another Blazer touchdown.
The Blazers widened their lead, 28-7, with a kick by Hackett.
Cheyenne found itself going nowhere on the next possession with tackles from Braddy, Stull and Hime.
The Blazers regained possession and scored touchdown No. 4 with a seven-yard run into the end zone by Sandusky. Hackett made good on his fourth kick and Torrington led, 35-7, as the fourth quarter began.
Two tackles by senior Kaden Romig and a stop from Hibben stalled Cheyenne’s first drive in the fourth. Kramer picked off a pass and Central lost possession.
Greiman led in rushing yards with 63 on three carries and one touchdown. Braddy tallied 54 yards rushing on seven carries with Sandusky posting 20 yards on three carries and two touchdowns.
Moorehouse completed 12 of 18 passes for 156 yards. Hibben received four passes for 79 yards.
Hackett kicked five of five field goals for the Blazers.
On defense, Greiman totaled seven unassisted tackles. Hime contributed four unassisted tackles, one fumble recovery and one sack. Romig totaled 15 defensive points, forcing one fumble and making three unassisted tackles.
The Blazers travel to Yuma, Colorado, this week for a game on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
“We are excited to get back to a full week of practice and focus more and special teams,” Stienmetz said.
