SCOTTSBLUFF – The Torrington High School Blazers wrestling team rang in 2025 with a bang, defeating Scottsbluff for the first time in several years at a cross-border dual hosted by the Bearcats on January 9.
The Blazers pulled ahead of Scottsbluff by five points to triumph in the cliffhanger, 38-33.
"Scottsbluff is always a tough team and to get a win heading into the weekend created some great momentum," coach Cody Grant said. "Our guys went out and competed hard and we won some big matches with bonus points which was the difference of the dual."
Boarding the bus again on Friday, Torrington traveled to Douglas for the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament featuring 35 teams from across Wyoming and Nebraska. The Blazers finished 15th as a team, collecting 70 points with two wrestlers snapping up hardware.
Scottsbluff Dual
Senior Tyler Nicolay battled Oscar Brown through three periods in the 120-pound match with Nicolay ultimately winning by a 16-6 major decision.
Fellow senior Barrett Eichenberger won the 138-pound bout for the Blazers, pinning Luke Gamino at 4 minutes, 47 seconds.
Griffin Wolfe, also a senior, stepped onto the mats next for the Blazers to take on Touny Hrasky-Brown at 144 pounds. Wolfe defeated Hrasky-Brown by a 12-2 major decision to post four points for Torrington.
In the 150-pound bracket, junior Colby Sandusky collected six points for the Blazers after pinning Tucker Abell at 1:17.
Junior Brendan Woodard fought Milo Cervantes into the second period of the 157-pound match before Woodard pinned his opponent with 45 seconds remaining on the clock.
At 190 pounds, freshman Brandt Eichenberger pinned Alex Fox at 3:12, pulling the Blazers up by six more points.
Freshman David Ibarra rounded out the evening for Torrington with a win against Jerry Rodriquez in the 190-pound match, placing the Blazers up, 38-27.
Shane Shatto
Two Blazers bagged fifth-place medals at Shane Shatto.
Barrett Eichenberger dug deep to defeat Cheyenne Central’s Kaden Kimzey by a 4-2 decision in the fifth-place match for the 138-pound bracket.
In the 150-pound division, Sandusky advanced to fifth on the leaderboard, pinning Logan Anderson of Worland 31 seconds into the fifth-place match.
Nicolay tallied 10 team points for the Blazers at 120 pounds. Senior Kaden Romig and junior Ty Albaugh each posted nine points in the 165-pound and 157-pound brackets, respectively. Brandt Eichenberger collected eight team points at 175 pounds with junior Jaden Ruiz scoring four points in the 144-pound bracket.
