TORRINGTON – A point-for-point battle between the Torrington High School Blazers and the Bridgeport Bulldogs from Nebraska came down to the wire in the first 24 minutes of regulation with Torrington leading by one possession at the end of the first, second and third quarters.

Bridgeport ultimately overtook Torrington with a nine-point run midway into the final quarter and remained in the lead to tally the win, 52-39.

“Bridgeport is a solid team and again we had them on the ropes,” coach Logan Barker said. “Once we get over that hump of finishing ball games, we are going to be tough to beat. I was proud of how hard our boys played as their effort was great. We have a big weekend ahead with conference games in Douglas on Friday and Newcastle on Saturday.”

Torrington won the first quarter against Bridgeport by one possession, 12-10. Senior Ryan Moorehouse kicked off scoring for the Blazers with a trey. Sophomore Julian Stromski followed up with a jumper and senior Mac Hibben drained a 3-pointer.

Junior Landre Greiman and senior Brayden Hime each scored a free throw before Greiman netted a close-range shot.

Both teams scored nine points in a neck-and-neck second quarter. Senior Weston Dyer tossed in an outside shot and scored from inside the perimeter.

Hime and Moorehouse both contributed two additional points before halftime and the Blazers remained ahead by one possession, 21-19, as the teams headed for the locker rooms.

Torrington and Bridgeport fought for control of the scoreboard in a physical third quarter that saw both teams tally 11 points.

Bridgeport pulled up and tied the game at 23 points. The Blazers responded with a seven-point run anchored by Stromski  and Hibben, placing Torrington ahead, 30-23.

The Bulldogs went on a seven-point run of their own to narrow the Blazers’ lead back to one possession, 32-30, as the final quarter began.

The game reached a 32-32 stalemate with a bucket by Bridgeport early in the fourth. The Blazers regained the lead, 34-32, with a jumper from Moorehouse.

The Bulldogs matched Torrington in scoring at 34 points. Stromski netted a free throw and the scoreboard tipped back in the Blazers’ favor, 35-34.

Bridgeport launched a decisive nine-point run to take control of the scoreboard. Despite points by Dyer and Greiman, the Bulldogs steadily widened their lead to 13 points by the end of regulation.

Moorehouse set the momentum for the Torrington offense against Bridgeport with nine points. Stromski contributed eight, Dyer seven and Hibben and Greiman six apiece. Hime rounded out the score sheet with three points.

On the boards, Stromski, Greiman and Hibben each pulled down six rebounds while Moorehouse tallied five.

Torrington returns to Wyoming 3A play this weekend with back-to-back games against Douglas and Newcastle. The Blazers travel to play the Bearcats on Friday at 7 p.m. and host the Dogies on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Torrington is currently No. 3 in the 3A East with a 3-2 conference record.
