LANCE CREEK – Betty Jean (Carmicheal) Reed, age 89, a beloved figure of Lance Creek, Wyoming, and Niobrara County passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024.
Betty Jean was born to James Carmichael and Betty Terry on February 15, 1935, in Guernsey. Later in 1972, her mother remarried Denzel Moxley.
Betty Jean attended her high school years in Wheatland. She was a cheerleader, active in the Student Council and National Honor Society, spreading enthusiasm and school spirit with her infectious energy. Her high school years were filled with notable achievements and fond memories. She was a secretary for TNT and was involved in the Future Homemakers of America (FHA). Her melodious voice graced the school choir and shone brightly as a member of the Sextette. Betty Jean’s peers recognized her charm and spirit by crowning her Homecoming Princess, and she also served as the Annual Business Manager, showcasing her leadership and organizational skills. Betty Jean had a passion for water skiing, making the most of her adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors. During her high school years is when she met “Bud” Reed on a rival basketball team for the first time.
After attending the University of Wyoming Liberal Arts Program, she was employed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at the State Capital Building. Through mutual friends and festivities, she once again crossed paths with Percy “Bud” Reed, and they were married on March 29, 1959, in Wheatland. Once they were married, they resided on the 77 Ranch for 62 years. Bud passed away in 2021, leaving Betty Jean to continue the rest of life in their home.
Betty Jean was a longtime member of the 5280 Homemakers Club, where her commitment and kindness touched many lives. Her dedication to the Cowbells Club showcased her active involvement in the community, where she was always a vibrant presence.
Known for her culinary talents, Betty Jean’s amazing pies and homemade noodles were legendary, bringing comfort and delight to countless family gatherings, brandings, and community events. Her skills in the kitchen were a testament to her love for her family and friends.
Betty Jean’s life was filled with love, laughter, and dedication. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy will continue to inspire and warm the hearts of those who carry her memory.
A celebration of Betty Jean’s life will be held on June 5, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Prairie Hills Community Center. In lieu of flowers and plants, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choosing in honor of Betty Jean’s generous spirit and commitment to her community.
