Twenty-five years ago today, four hijacked commercial airliners changed the country in the span of a single morning. Two struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City. A third hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. A fourth, believed to be headed for the U.S. Capitol, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers fought back against the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, making Sept. 11, 2001, the deadliest terror attack in American history.
