2020 Sagebrush N Roses a great success for EWC Board of Trustees

TORRINGTON – Sagebrush ‘N Roses 2020 event received great recognition at the February Eastern Wyoming College Board of Trustee meeting.

During the informational Mr. John Hansen the Director of Institutional Development and Ms. Tami Afdahl the Director of College Relations both reported a significant increase in the amount of money raised at this year’s event as well as the overall event process.

“We literally had the most successful Sagebrush ‘N Roses in the history of the college,” Hansen said. Hansen went on to say that in comparison to the tenth year of the event they netted about $10,000 and compared to the $60,000 in 2020.

Hansen said that the there were a lot of aspects that made this year better than in the past including a great campaign paired with “cost containment”.

“As a college we should feel very proud and also humbled by that love and support from our community,” Hansen said.

The proceeds from Sagebrush N Roses paired with various donations puts the ATEC building even closer to completion.

“We’re gonna be sub $100,000 in the next few days,” Hansen said.

The February Board meeting opened up with the introduction of the EWC Rodeo Team and Men’s Basketball Team followed by the Student Senate Update by Student Senate President Mr. Josh Andreasen.

Max Maynard was recognized as the Civitas Student.

There were no open forum items and the agenda, January minutes and Financial Report were all approved.

The Board voted to approve the appointment of Ms. Holly Lara to the position of Director of Human Resources. She was previously with development for 18 years.

Board Policy 5.0 of Admissions and 5.13 of the Student Code of Conduct were both approved and the Board moved into the Informational Items.

Dr. Margaret Farley the Vice President for Douglas Campus reported that they have been looking into options for campus housing.

The Staff Alliance has put up a board to showcase faculty who have been with the school for 14 years and longer for this month in honor of the date of Valentine’s Day.

Dr. Colleen Mitchell reported for the Faculty Senate that there were concerns with methods of dealing with academic dishonesty and the desire to pursue research regarding faculty pay.

Updating the Board on faculty and student services was Dr. Debbie Ochsner. There have been questions regarding the service animal on campus but she said they are just answering questions as they come up as opposed to making a big presentation about it. “It is a really nice, well-behaved animal,” Ochsner said. Ochsner also commented on Sagebrush N Roses and the classroom evaluations.

Ms. Lara addressed the Board on the new appointment to Director of HR saying, “I will continue to help with Sagebrush N Roses as a committee member. I think it’s important. It’s important to the college.”

Dr. Heidi Edmunds gave a PowerPoint presentation on academic services to show the trends and enrollment as well as talking about the Phi Theta Kappa enrollment.

Dr. Roger Humphrey broke down the different aspects of Student Services including housing, tutoring and other aspects focused on the experiences for the students and facilities.

The Projects and Major Maintenance report given by Mr. Keith Jarvis the Director of Physical Plant said the number of service calls fluctuates too rapidly to accurately report if maintenance is keeping up.

The meeting adjourned into Executive Session with no action taken.
