Youth grapplers shine at Mitchell

GOSHEN COUNTY – The Torrington Wrestling Club collected several trophies at the Jan. 4 Mitchell Wrestling Tournament in Mitchell, Neb.

TWC, part of the larger USA Wrestling club, teaches competitors different styles of wrestling including Greco, Folkstyle and Freestyle.

Dale Mundt Jr., a coach for TWC, said competitors are able to start at the age of four and continue until 14 before going on to compete middle school, high school and ultimately collegiate wrestling.

There are stateside and overseas opportunities. When Mundt participated in USA Wrestling he earned a spot to compete in China, for example.

Mundt said there are TWC wrestlers headed to overseas and national competitions this year.

The state tournament this year will be in the middle of April at the Caper Events Center for the 8 and up age bracket.

“We’re trying to teach them at that age the style we want them to wrestle when they get to high school,” Mundt said. “At the Olympics they do that style of wrestling too. The Olympics is USA Wrestling as well.”

At the Mitchell Wrestling Tournament, several TWC wrestlers took home trophies and earned team points.
