Woodruff 2nd, seven Cyclones place

CASPER – Senior heavyweight Hunter Woodruff reached the state championship match and was one of seven Southeast Cyclones to place at the 2A State Tournament in Casper over the weekend.

After a bye, Woodruff rattled off two wins Friday, pinning Ryan Keiter (Big Piney) in the second period. He went the distance against Tanner Feehan (Moorcroft), winning by a 6-2 decision. Woodruff returned to the mat Saturday night for the championship match. He was pinned by Big Piney’s Asencion Pelham in the third period.

Behind Woodruff’s second-place finish, Greg Logsdon had the best finish, taking third at 106 pounds. He started with a 19-3 technical fall over Ammon Halls (Cokeville), before pinning Lovell’s Cardon Mickelson in the first period. In the semi-finals, Logsdon went the distance, but lost by an 8-5 decision against Sundance’s Myles Stefanich.

After his loss, Logsdon came back with a vengeance on Saturday, pinning Sean Buckmiller (Moorcroft) in a minute to advance to the third-place match. Against Hulett’s Deonte Taylor, Logsdon won by pin in the second period, snagging third.

Brock Blevins was not far behind on the podium, finishing fourth at 113 pounds. Starting Friday, Blevins pinned Sundance’s Owen Haier in the second period, before snagging a fall over Mason Schell (Big Piney) in 50 seconds. In the semi’s, Blevins was pinned in the second period, by Glenrock’s Tate Stoddard.

Blevins dropped to the consolation semi-finals, where he beat Mica Herrera (Moorcroft) by a 15-3 major decision. The Cyclone went the distance in the third-place match against Wright’s Preston Seamands, but lost by a 13-0 major decision.

Chase Lovercheck (152) was one of two Cyclones to finish fifth, starting by pinning Derik Smith (Burns/Pine Bluffs) in 44 seconds. Against Adam Willoughby (Big Piney), Lovercheck went the distance but lost in a 10-6 decision, sending him to the wrestle-backs, where he rattled off two pins, beating Jonah Young (Glenrock) in the second period and Austin Butler (Hulett) in the first.

In the consolation semi-finals, Lovercheck was pinned in the third period against Moorcroft’s Casey DeLong, sending the Cyclone to the fifth-place match. Lovercheck ended his Cyclone career with a win, pinning Kemmerer’s Lowell Ellis in the second period to snag fifth.

Tate Carson was the other Southeast product to take first. In his first match at 182 pounds, Carson pinned Shoshoni’s Raistlin DuBeau, before falling by pin in the first period against Cokeville’s Bentley Johnson.

Once in the lower bracket, Carson rattled off two wins, pinning Hunter Worman (Wright) in the second period and recording a 19-4 technical fall over Lovell’s Kerry Powell. In the consolation semi’s, Burns/Pine Bluffs’ Boe Clayson got the better of Carson, pinning him in the third period. The Cyclone dropped to the fifth-place match, where he pinned Big Piney’s Justin Seeman in the second period.

Brady Tosh started his weekend with a loss at 160 pounds, suffering a pin to Moorcroft’s Rowdy Pfeil. In the wrestle-backs, Tosh strung together three-straight wins, besting Wyatt Horrocks (Rocky Mountain) and Lash Branigan (Burns/Pine Bluffs), both by a 12-2 major decision, before pinning Wind River’s Colter Collver in the first period.

In the consolation semi-finals, Tosh was pinned at the 4:40-mark by Skyler Hargrove (Big Piney), dropping him to the fifth-place match. Tosh went the distance, but lost in a 4-2 decision against Justin Marden (Moorcroft) to finish sixth.

Brian Baker took the mats at 195 pounds for Southeast, falling in his opening match by a 14-8 decision against Glenrock’s Josh Burrus. Once in the lower bracket, Baker won three-straight matches by pin, besting Kaiden Burk (Wind River) in the third, Kelly Powell (Lovell) in the second and Jeydon Boyd (Kemmerer) in the third.

Baker’s streak of wins was halted in the semi-finals of the lower bracket, where he lost by a 7-1 decision against Cokeville’s Rick Nate. In the fifth-place match, Baker was pinned at the 1:36-mark against Tommy Schlater (Moorcroft).

Kaden Brothwell joined Logsdon at 106 pounds. His first match came in the form of a 17-8 major decision over Saratoga’s Joey Gonzalez. Brothwell then lost back-to-back matches, losing an 11-0 decision against Stefanich and falling by pin in the second against Lusk’s James Cushman.

Wyatt Lackman (120) suffered an opening loss to Kemmerer’s Dawson Schramm, falling by pin in the first period. Lackman won his first match of the lower bracket by a 10-3 decision over Joe Hajba (Big Piney), before falling to Saratoga’s Jaxon King by pin in the second period.

Ethan Steinhausen competed at 152 pounds, like Lovercheck. He suffered a pin in the first period against Willoughby, before pinning Smith in the second period. Against Ellis, Steinhausen was pinned in the second period.

Conner Smith was the final Cyclone to compete for Southeast, taking the mats at 170 pounds and starting his day with a loss via pin in the first period against Burns/Pine Bluffs’ Kyle Thurin. In the lower bracket, Smith pinned David Yates (Wind River) in 47 seconds, before falling via pin in the second against Noah Halsey (Glenrock).

With seven placers, Southeast racked up 118 team points, finishing sixth, which is far ahead of last year’s 13th place team finish. Moorcroft took the top team spot with 273 points, followed by Glenrock (193.5) and Cokeville (169).
