DANSVILLE, N.Y. – Virgil Clifton Penny, 88, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 23, 2019, at Strong Memorial Hospital following an illness.

He was born in Marland, Okla., on Dec. 19, 1930, a son of the late Frank and Claudia (Hardin) Penny. On March 17, 1983, he was married to Judith (Hanrahan) Penny who survives. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by a son Virgil Lee Penny, and several brothers and sisters.

He was one of 12 children born to Claudia and Frank Penny. Virgil spent his childhood in Oklahoma until he entered the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school. He spent four years in the Air Force and then went to college at Oklahoma State University. 

After graduation, he was a teacher in Oxford, Neb. He started working for the U.S. Postal Service during this time and eventually became the Postmaster. He worked for the USPS for nearly 30 years, serving as Postmaster in Torrington. Virgil retired from the USPS in 1989. 

After retirement, Virgil enjoyed playing golf, playing solitaire, gardening and fishing. He was able to travel to visit family and friends. Virgil had five children with his first wife, Evonne: Ginny, Cathy, David, Clifton-Michael and Virgil Lee.

In addition to his wife Penny, Virgil is survived by his children, Virginia (Robert) Ward, Kathy Penny, David Penny, Michael (Nancy) Penny, Larry (Nancy) Reed, Rebecca (Wesley) Deen, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday April 26, in St. Pius Catholic Church, 35 Maple Ave, Cohocton, N.Y. 14826. Interment with full military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, N.Y. Arrangements by the Hindle Funeral Home Inc. 271 Main St. Dansville, N.Y.
