TORRINGTON – Funeral services for Vaneta M. Kerns, 66, will be 10 a.m. today (Friday, July 27, 2018) at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Gary Flom officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. 

Vaneta died July 23, 2018, at Community Hospital. Memorials may be given to either the emergency room at Community Hospital or local EMS. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 5pm at the funeral home and the casket will be open at the church prior to the service. Vaneta was born May 13, 1952, in Bassett, Neb., the daughter of Dalbert and Vivian (Lange) Nelson. She grew up and attended rural schools in the area, graduating high school in Stapleton, Neb. 

Vaneta attended Western Nebraska General Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. She worked at DePaul Hospital in Cheyenne from 1973 to 1976. 

She married Roy Kerns on July 24, 1976, and they were later divorced.  She moved to Torrington and started work at Community Hospital, where she was employed at the time of her death.

Vaneta enjoyed sewing, crafts, gardening, traveling and spending time with family. She was a member of the American Trauma Society, the Society of Trauma Nurses and the Emergency Nurses Association.

Vaneta is survived by a daughter Cheryl (Kari) Dionne of Bar Nunn; two sons Michael Kerns and Justin Kerns both of Sulphur, La.; a sister ViDal (Ken) Butler of Elm Creek, Neb.; and six grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Steven Butler.
