Twisters take second in Arvada with 4-1 mark

The Panhandle Twisters 14-and-under softball team went 4-1 at the Super Series tournament in Arvada over the weekend on its way to a second-place finish, falling in the championship game to the Colorado Psyclones, 6-5.

Twisters take second in Arvada with 4-1 mark

ARVADA, Colo. – The Panhandle Twisters 14-and-under softball team went 4-1 at the Super Series tournament in Arvada over the weekend on its way to a second-place finish, falling in the championship game to the Colorado Psyclones, 6-5.

Twisters 8, Prodigy 5

The Twisters were outhit 6-4 in their opening contest of the weekend, but still were able to pull out the win. After the Prodigy, from Parker, Colo., scored three runs in the top of the first, the Twisters rebounded with five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Panhandle plated another three runs in the third to go up 8-3. The Prodigy rally was cut short after two runs were scored in the fourth.

Brady Laucomer, Calysta Trevino and HeLena and Emily McGaugh all had a hit in the win. RBIs came in from Emily McGaugh, Avery Fox and A.J. West.

Trevino pitched 3 2/3 innings to rack up the win, giving up six hits and five earned runs with a strikeout. Fox came in for the final out of the game for the save, with a strikeout and a walk to her credit.

Twisters 11, Synergy 3

Synergy, from Thornton, Colo., struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Twisters found the equalizer in the second inning. The offense for the Panhandle was turned loose in the third inning, scoring six runs, followed by another four in the fourth. Synergy plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Twisters still picked up the win.

Trevino had a standout day at the plate, finishing the game with three hits, including a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. West also had a double and an RBI in the game, with the team’s other two hits coming from Laucomer and Fox.

Brylee Dean toed the rubber for 3 23 innings, firing off 70 pitches, 50 percent of which were strikes. She allowed two hits and three earned runs, while recording four strikeouts and five walks. Fox came in again for the final out to seal the win.

Twisters 11, Fever 1

The Twisters gave up on run in the top of the first inning against the Fever (Evans, Colo.) to wrap up pool play, but then it was all the Panhandle. The Twisters plated a run in both the first and second innings, before exploding for nine runs in the third inning to pick up the win.

Laucomer had a big stick for the Twisters, knocking three hits, including a triple, on her way to scoring three runs. Fox and Emily McGaugh both had two-hit games as well, with Fox recording a double. Fox had four RBIs in the win.

Fox helped herself out by pitching a solid game from the mound. She had 47 pitches with a 64 percent strike percentage. She allowed one hit and one earned run, with five strikeouts in the game.

Twisters 10, Cougars 5

The Panhandle had to come from behind to win against the Cougars (Windsor, Colo.) in the second round of the bracket, after the Twisters had a bye. The Cougars came out hot, scoring three runs in the first and another two in the second to go up 5-0. The Twisters started clawing their way back into the contest, plating two runs in the third and adding another three in the fourth to knot the score at five apiece.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Twisters had a solid sixth inning. Emily McGaugh scored on a wild pitch to go up 6-5. Following the score, two additional Twisters got on base, loading the bases. Fox came to the plate and hit a grand slam, plating four runs to give the Panhandle a 10-5 advantage. In the bottom of the frame, the Cougars got out on three straight at bats, ending the game.

Fox had herself a game, recording two hits, five RBIs and two runs scored. West and HeLena and Emily McGaugh both had two hits apiece in the win, with the Twisters racking up 12 in the contest. Dean and Laucomer also filled their stat line with an RBI apiece.

On the mound, Fox pitched all six innings, allowing five hits but only one earned run. She notched three strikeouts and only one walk in the win.

Psyclones 6, Twisters 5

The Twisters posted five runs in the top of the first inning on five hits, but their bats were stifled for the rest of the game, with only seven hits throughout the game. The Psyclones (Lone Tree, Colo.) scored a run in the bottom of the first, third and fourth innings to trim the score to 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, the Psyclones plated three runs to take a one-score advantage. The Panhandle could not score the equalizer in the sixth, falling 6-5 in the championship.

At the plate, Laucomer and West each had two hits, with West knocking a double in the first inning. Fox had two RBIs in the loss.

Fox pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, only three of which were earned. She had three strikeouts in the game. Trevino pitched for an inning, allowing zero hits and runs.
