BRIGHTON, Colo. – The Torrington Twisters kicked things up a notch over the weekend as the 14-and-under team won a 16-and-under tournament in Colorado last weekend.

The Twisters went a combined 6-0, outscoring the competition 69-19 over the two-day event.

“We were using this tournament to get us ready for the National Tournament at the end of July,” coach Dan Fox said. “We were excited about how things went. We always expect to compete, but I didn’t expect to dominate like we did.”

Torrington rolled to an 8-2 win over the RMSP Cougars and a 10-1 win over the Rocky Mountain Thunder in the first two games of pool play.

Against the Cougars, the Twisters fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but countered with eight unanswered runs over the next two innings.

Avery Fox picked up the win, striking out four in the complete game performance. Offensively, Brady Laucomer, Brylee Dean, Avery West and Paityn Homan collected two hits apiece.

In the second game, the Twisters controlled the game from the opening frame.

They spread out 10 runs over four innings before the Thunder finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Calysta Trevino picked up the win, striking out four over 3 1/3 innings. Fox tallied the final two outs to close out the game with two strike outs. Offensively, Dean led the Twisters offensively with two hits and four RBIs.

In the final game of Saturday’s pool play, the Twisters jumped out to a 13-2 lead after two innings but were forced to fend off a late rally from Rapid City, S.D.’s Assault.

The Assault scraped back with six runs in the bottom of the third.

However, Dean shut down the rally with a strikeout to end the game, picking up the win. Fox, West and Homan combined for six of the team’s 11 hits in the win.

The next day, the Twisters opened bracket play with an 18-4 win over the Prodigy.

Torrington did most its damage in the top of the third courtesy of 13 runs.

Up until the third, the teams were locked in a 5-4 battle.

Dean and Trevino reached base to open the inning, sparking the 13-run frame, but it was Emily McGaugh who highlighted the inning with a three-run homerun, handing the Twisters a 16-4 advantage.

Laucomer also drove in three runs in the inning with a single and double.

The win advanced the team to face off against the Colorado Crossfire in the semifinals.

After a scoreless first inning, the Twisters broke the tie the top of the second inning with Trevino’s double. It was the start of seven runs over the final three innings en route to a 7-2 victory over the Crossfire.

Fox picked up the win, striking out three over four innings. Offensively, the Twisters tallied five hits – one each from Laucomer, HeLena McGaugh, Fox, Trevino, and Kierra Miller.

The win advanced Torrington to the championship game against the Northern Colorado Sting.

The Twisters used a pair of five-run innings to pull away for an 11-2 win.

With a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second inning,

Laucomer singled adding to the slim Torrington lead, and it snowballed from there as the Twisters next four batters reached base.

They kept the momentum going into the third, adding another five runs to extend the advantage to nine.

It was again Fox who allowed only three hits and struck out four in the complete-game effort, including a 1-2-3 fourth to close out the game. Laucomer, Fox, Dean and Trevino collected two hits apiece to lead the Twister offense.

The Twisters are now 49-9 with only a handful of games yet to play this summer.

“It sets us up to play at a high level in July,” Fox said.

The Twisters will take this weekend off before returning to action in Greeley, Colo. on July 13-14 in a final tune up prior to the team’s trip to Bentonville, Ark. for the Midwest National at the end of the month.

“We are thankful for the continued support,” Fox concluded.
