NEWCASTLE – Despite 33 points from Jordan Malm, the Torrington Trailblazers boys basketball team lost on the road Friday to conference foe Newcastle, 79-66.
In a game that was tight into the third quarter, the Dogies proved to have the edge in the fourth quarter, taking a slim advantage and growing it to 13 points by the end of regulation.
Malm had a solid game all around, racking up 33 points. He knocked down all three of his shots from behind the arc, while hitting 9-of-14 from the two-point area and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. The junior had three assists and also led Torrington with nine boards, six on offense, and four steals.
Behind Malm, Jared Lemmon was the only other Blazer in double-figures, tallying 10 points, which he paired with eight rebounds and three steals. Bryan Lemmon was not far behind, turning in nine points, six boards, two steals and a team-high six assists.
Bo Moorehouse kicked in seven points on 3-of-3 shooting from inside the arc and 1-of-2 shooting from the free-throw line. Rounding out his stat line, Moorehouse had a board, two assists, a steal and the team’s only block. Nathan Stitt and Josh Posten combined for seven points to wrap up Torrington’s scoring. The two also combined for four boards, three assists and a steal.
The Blazers shot 51 percent from the two-point area, but only 25 percent from behind the arc and 56 percent from the charity stripe.
Torrington now has a 4-5 record, with an 0-1 record to open the conference schedule. The Blazers look to return to the win column when they host Mitchell, Neb. on Thursday with an 8 p.m. tipoff.
