TORRINGTON – In a dual with five matches that went the distance, the Torrington Trailblazers squeaked out a 36-34 home win Thursday over Rawlins in their final action of the regular season.

The dual opened at 132 pounds, where Nicholas Sherbeyn was pinned in the first period against Gabe Munoz. Rawlins’ Jacob Dworek (138) bested Tristen Kingsley in a 9-5 decision. Torrington’s 145-pounder Cody Pierce suffered the same fate, falling in a 10-9 decision against Colby Rodriguez, putting the Blazers in a 12-0 hole to start the night.

Casey Britton (152) got the Blazers on the right track by pinning Robert Flores in the second period. Chase Dominguez went the distance at 160 pounds against Tristin Mikesell, falling in a 6-5 decision. At 170 pounds, Gabe Mitchell lost in a pin against Desmon Martinez, putting the Blazers at a 21-6 disadvantage.

Josh Kingsley put the Blazers back on the board at 182 pounds, pinning Weston Bezold late in the first period. With a Rawlins open at 195, Ryan Walson secured another six points for Torrington, cutting the lead to 21-18. Cutter Foster got the better of Brandon Bennick in an 8-0 decision at 220 pounds, but Jacob Wamboldt got revenge by coming out on fire and pinning heavyweight Domingo Acosta in 14 seconds.

Torrington and Rawlins traded a pair of forfeits in the lighter weights, with Riley Duffield winning at 106 and Rawlins’ Gerardo Lopez winning at 113 pounds. Heading into the 120-pound match, Torrington was down 31-30. Quentin Meyer got the better of Brayan Ortega by pinning him with 28 seconds to go in the second period, giving the Blazers a 36-31 lead.

Pake Haun and Trezdon Martinez closed out the night, with the outcome of the dual resting on the outcome of their match. The 126-pounders went all six minutes, with Haun falling in a 5-0 decision. The decision win by Martinez gave Rawlins three points, but those three did not make up the difference, securing the 36-34 win for Torrington.

The Blazers return to the mats for the postseason, with the 3A East Regional Tournament slated for this weekend in Worland. Action kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
